It was reported on the BBC news as the parents releasing the footage to highlight the dangers of not securing tall furniture when you have young kids.

I would it thought it highlights the dangers of not supervising young children when they are playing...
I'm sure I read that the parents were asleep at the time and the kids were playing by themselves in their room. As a parent you obviously keep an eye on your kids but you can't do it 24/7.

Surprised people are calling it fake, I didn't think that for one moment when I first saw it yesterday. Perhaps I'm naive!

Whether it's fake or not, it's hopefully been useful to me. My little sod of a 4 year old is always bloody climbing on stuff. I showed it to him to try and scare him into stopping. Although his response was "Can I still climb on stuff that IS screwed to the wall?"

Exactly. The drawers are, indeed, wedged open. We never see them shut, not even at the beginning, and it is those that save the child from being squished. Normally, if a unit like this topples over then the drawer would slam shut - Even if it somehow gets stuck open during the fall, it would free up and close during the subsequent sliding. There is a pivot point throughout that keeps the unit from exerting any real pressure on the child. Also, of course, you may wonder why you would keep a completely empty set of drawers in a bedroom, but I'll accept that some people do.

I know it sounds a high-risk thing to do to promote the benefits of CCTV, but we've all seen crazier things in the news. It just looks fishy to me, that's all. If you see it as a heart-warming tale of brotherly love shared for public safety awareness, that's great too...
You have to take in to account that there is a basketball at the base of the dresser which is likely responsible for the fact that the draws did not slam shut, even though I don't personally think that the drawers would slam shut every single time a dresser toppled over like that.

It's also probably what supported the dresser enough for the brother underneath to wriggle around enough so that it could be pushed off him.

The fact that the dresser tips forward after it's off his brother tends to prove that the basketball is still there.

It's interesting.

Up until this morning, I had only seen 'the rescue' and my first thoughts on seeing it were that it looked fake.

This morning I saw 'the topple' for the first time and then, using my preconception, looked for reasons to support my earlier point of view.

If I had started off seeing the topple first, maybe my spidey senses wouldn't have triggered ? Who knows...

They've gotten their 15 minutes of fame from this faked up clip. Well done to them.
The news hyped it up for them by editing out the time the rescuer spent wandering around and even climbing on top. They cut straight to the end where he starts to push it off after his brother nearly crawls out.
The whole video is unremarkable and they should have concentrated on the insecure furniture rather than the 'rescue',

Faked in as much that it's been edited to cut out the part where the other kid was climbing all over the chest before then helping his brother but that's about it, the rest is real.

The draws are very clearly still wedged open the entire time, which is probably what saved the child from serious injury or even death. When his brother climbs on top of it at around the 1:15 mark, the child on the floor is clearly in distress and crying so i'd say any notion that there's "no downward pressure" is false.
This.
