He has won two Decathlon Olympic gold medals and so many titles. But still has not received a Knighthood yet even though Jessica Ennis Hill and Mary Peters are already Dames

Because he hasn't. Now much more to it than that.

If that's true then surely the question should be "Why hasn't Daley Thompson been bumped-off by Prince Philip yet?"

I'd rather have a game (or even two) on the ZX Spectrum (and, I think, C64) than a knighthood, tbh. Knighthoods are bollocks, but those games gave a shitload of kids a shitload of fun and a lot of good memories. I don't even like sport, but I'll always remember those games.

Presumably because he doesn't have enough friends in high places.

I had that on the C64, was a good fun game. Could never time the javelin right.

Also had the Daley Thompson Decathlon board game which was fun (the exact same game was sold as Bruce Jenner Decathlon Game in America).

Maybe he was expected to achieve more - but injury put paid to that so it was difficult to do more than upgrade him to CBE post career.

I seem to remember he was controversial but I don't know why.

I'd also argue that his career results are slightly less impressive than Jess Ennis-Hill's - if we are trying to compare like with like.

Because they weren't handed out to people for winning medals when he was at the top of his game. Thanks to Tony Blair and David Cameron awarding every successful athlete they have lost that special uniqueness they once had.

Didn't he whistle during the anthem when getting his medal?

In the 80s the honours system was different - gongs primarily went to establishment figures - civil servants, BBC types, etc. If he had done his stuff 30 years later, he would have been rewarded. Note the world cup winning football team got nothing either, yet were given retrospective honours 30 years later. Meanwhile, the England cricket team all got OBEs and MBEs for winning a single test series in 2005. Times and things have changed.

I think you're right. Both the 1980 and 1984 Olympics were marred with boycotts from some fairly strong nations, especially in 1980. Whilst he would have no doubt have still been right up there, not competing against the Soviet Union, USA, East/West Germany, etc. would've made his path to glory a bit easier.

Err, how do you make that out?

Daley - 2 Olympic Golds, 1 World Gold, 2 European Golds, 3 Commonwealth Golds
Jess - 1 Olympic Gold, 3 World Golds, 1 European Gold, 0 Commonwealth Golds

Its worth noting that the first World Championship was not introduced until 1983 and then only every 4 years, unlike now when they take place every 2 years, so he would surely have won more of those if they were like today.

He beat the best of the East in 1980 and the best of the West in 1984. I'm not aware of any boycotted competitor who would have beat him in either if they'd been there.

He also beat the best of the World in the 1983 World Champs (inbetween the 2 Olympics) which kind of proves he was the best overall in that period IMO.

Seb Coe was knighted and made a Lord. But that was only after he became a Tory MP...

Hingsen, for one - his biggest rival, I think and an athlete who he regularly exchanged World Records with.

Thompson was/is great, but there's no denying that both '80 & '84 were kinda easy for people to win medals.

Hingsen won silver in 1982 Euros, 1983 Worlds, 1984 Olympics and 1986 Euros. Guess who won the gold in all of those? He didn't compete in the 1978 Euros (when Daley won silver aged just 20).

Not sure why anyone would think Hingsen would have beaten Daley in 1980 if he'd been allowed to be there?
