Hingsen won silver in 1982 Euros, 1983 Worlds, 1984 Olympics and 1986 Euros. Guess who won the gold in all of those? He didn't compete in the 1978 Euros (when Daley won silver aged just 20).

Not sure why anyone would think Hingsen would have beaten Daley in 1980 if he'd been allowed to be there?
Because he broke the World Record numerous times! Also, the then record holder in June '80 was prevented from participating too - always handy if they're not around, I say.

My point is that Thompson had a significantly easier Olympic run compared with Ennis-Hill.

I'd rather have a game (or even two) on the ZX Spectrum (and, I think, C64) than a knighthood, tbh. Knighthoods are bollocks, but those games gave a shitload of kids a shitload of fun and a lot of good memories. I don't even like sport, but I'll always remember those games.
Not to mention pocket money. I had quite a lucrative sideline in replacing or repairing Speccie keyboard membranes and fixing joysticks that had been knackered by Decathalon

Ennis - One gold medal
Pendleton - Two gold medals
Kenny (nee Trott) Four gold medals

The difference is even greater if you start to add in World championships and other tites. Sally Gunnel too has a record to rival Ennis.

World record tallies are not the same as beating someone in competition, which is what Daley did to Hingsen.

In your view it would appear that some gold medals are worth rather more than others.

Is it because he shagged Princess Anne?
I heard that it was Princess Michael that he shagged

Certainly the sport should be taken into account. Decathlon and Heptathlon are arguably the hardest won gold medals of them all - leaving little room for skill diversity into other disciplines in the same games.

They are - 10 (or 7) events for just 1 medal versus a sport where athletes stand a chance of winning multiple medals at any one meeting (i.e. swimming, cycling, etc.).
