ED Rhona and Pierce
Why on earth did they have Pierce do that to Rhona? It is like they are making him as bad as possible on purpose so she ends up back with Paddy. I don't like the storyline why could he not have been a good guy?

No way Rhona would stand for that - she'd be out of there like a shot.

I was quite surprised. I'd seen some people on here suggest that he's gradually start becoming more manipulative and possibly go to domestic violence but I wasn't expecting rape, especially not so soon in the storyline. I guess it highlights rape within a relationship though, where it still counts even if you're with each other. If someone says no, then you have to respect that, otherwise you'd be raping them.

However I thought Pierce was going to start hitting Rhona or at the very least emotionally abuse her, I did not think he would be capable of forcing himself on her after she had said no multiple times |

Last week I posted a spoiler from TV Choice mag in another thread after a lot of people said Pierce wasn't going down the controlling route after all and I did say he might rape her because he wouldn't take no for an answer. So it came as no surprise to me.

Pretty much following the Rob and Helen storyline in the Archers so far, so not that surprised.
Think Zoe Henry will be great in it, but it is basically one big plot device to get Rhona back with that cheating man baby Paddy. Just like the caravan fire was a plot device to get Lisa back making chicken soup (with a burnt hand) for Zak, the man who treated her like utter shit and always will. Am concluding from this that Ian Mcleod flipping lurrrrrrves men who screw around and thinks women should just embrace it. Cos look what happens when you try to make your own decisions! Disaster. Ladies, just accept you don't deserve any more than this. |

I think Paddy will be Rhona's saviour but given what's just happened to Rhona she'll find it hard to trust anyone, let alone the man who cheated on her.
Maybe my own experience has skewed my views somewhat but after what happened to me, even now... you tend not to let anyone in. |

Zak - "Oh your poor burnt hand - making me some chicken soup will be the perfect therapy for it!" Utter moron of a man! |

In this situation rape is just one more controlling behaviour. For me the problem is that it has happened too early - Pierce has not fully isolated and controlled Rhona yet so I would just expect her to leave immediately now. I doubt that will happen.

It did come as a surprise so soon after the proposal rejection. I thought we were going to have a slow-burning 'Rachel Hughes and Graham Clark' storyline involving controlling behaviour and a cliff edge!

You could tell Pierce was a wrong-un right from the start, probably why his wife Tess wanted out of the relationship.

Thanks - yep, think the utter humiliation of Lisa, and turning her into an idiot victim, has been a bit of a breaking point with Emmerdale for me. Zak is an utter prick. Not as abusive as Pierce obviously, but still a user and abuser. Apparently the writers think it's romantic. I don't.
I am not surprised with Pierce as rape is just one more way to control Rhona and I agree that her guilt (which she should not have been feeling at all) was the trigger for her to give in to him. Both horrible story-lines and as for Zak not allowing Kerry to own up - words fail! |

Although I do agree with you, the circumstances under which it was done were still interesting - Rhona essentially felt forced into allowing Pierce to go ahead, despite it being against her will (and I mean I presume she didn't fight him off, scratching and screaming, as he appeared oblivious as to what he had done), because she was feeling guilty for 'rejecting' his proposal and he made a big point of feeling humiliated in front of everyone when Paddy erroneously congratulated him. So she was kind of emotionally blackmailed into it as she was doing her best not to reject him again, so ended up putting his feelings ahead of her own. It was as though she was worried if she said no, he would leave her.

We didn't see anything. it was obvious Rhona didn't want sex but we never saw her say yes or no. Just the scene at the end where she seemed visibly shaken. We don't actually know what happened.

Saying that you're not in the mood and pushing away your partner is pretty much a "no". We know that she didn't want to have sex and we know that Pierce ignored her wishes.

It was interestingky done as she didn't scream no, fight etc but she ckearly communicated that she didn't want sex at that time and he went ahead anyway. So it was rape but he might not think it was and Rhona may even doubt it herself. |
