So when doing a self assessment, where it says business name, do you just put your real name, ie the name you use for your bank account?

ie Dave Smith.

What if you have two similar trading names...

Dave Smith trading as Cars Direct

Dave Smith trading as Cars indirect

two very similar businesses in the same industry, all money goes into the same bank account, all invoices either have Dave Smith T/A Cars Direct or Dave Smith T/A Cars Indirect on them.

Dave Smith treats both the same and puts both on the same book keeping software / spreadsheet.

As I understand with Limited companies, you could have 'Dave Smith Enterprise Ltd'

You then could have 'Cars Direct is a trading name of Dave Smith Enterprise Ltd'

So you could therefore invoice using just 'Dave Smith Enterprise Ltd' and keep records for just 'Dave Smith Enterprise Ltd'

So with a individual / sole trader, 'Dave Smith' is the same as 'Dave Smith Enterprise Ltd' ie, Dave Smith is the business name (like a limited company name) - the magnet that attracts all the money from everything that is business related to Dave Smith...

I sort of assume HMRC wont care too much as long as you declare everything...

Put either, they won't really care. It's an assessment on your earnings, if you were a ltd company you wouldn't be doing a self assessment for the business.

This.

The guides even say you can just use your full name. I do. It's a self assessment, not specific business related.
