I'm just using the dictionary definition. Just because a paper uses the wrong terms doesn't make the term wrong in Expat.
I'm pretty sure that the original, correct definition of expat refers to people whose employers have shipped them out to work abroad, usually establishing temporary residency. They move back (or are moved elsewhere) on their employer's orders.

It does not apply to economically inactive people who have basically moved over there permanently (even if they might hold a "belief" that they will return)

It's since been twisted by British people as a way to distinguish themselves from other immigrants, especially those Brits who move to a hot country and refuse to learn the local language or customs.

But surely there could be many nationalities outside the EU that board at Southampton. IF passports are currently not checked again after boarding why should that change if we leave the EU?
They are often. Most european cruising is by fellow europeans. Sweden did a passport check on UK passengers a while back as we were outside Schengen. Bloody nightmare. Stockholm was the first Schengen area port after embarkation.

I fail to see what the OP is getting at as he is I assume talking about a tourst visa which appears to simply require you to have sufficient funds to support yourself for the duration of your stay which one would assume any visitor to any country would need to have.

You said they weren't checked again after leaving port. Anyway I would have thought that as the ship knows where its going and doesn't just turn up at a random country unannounced that when checking passports on boarding they would know if any passenger did not have the right to visit any country that they were stopping at. Why would that change?

Surely the schengen rules would state that any vessel entering the schengen area from outside should have all passports checked. Why would the UK passengers be singled out?

Exactly, but the way the via application is worded it could mean that many who are perfectly able to support themselves can't fill in all the boxes because they don't have any actual income as in wages, benefits or pensions. As I pointed out - those who have left work early and can support themselves using savings in the period between leaving work and obtaining their first pension.

I, for one, could (hopefully) be in the position where I am self-funding until my main two pensions kick in. I won't have an income - save for savings interest (which is a joke right now) - other than taking out of my savings. The Spanish authorities SEEM to want you to provide details of a minimum 6 months pension income.

Therefore you COULD be recently retired, more than solvent, maybe have self-funded for a wee while yet denied entry as you haven't reached 6 months!!

Clearly that's bizarre, and there must be a protocol in place - which I'm asking what is that protocol as I may need to know. Is it to visit an embassy armed with bank statements? One sent via e-mail??

Or, simply, why cant there be a box on the form which states no income but self-sufficient? There MUST be plenty of non-EU self-funders wishing to visit the EU, what do they do to satisfy immigration?

It is the duty of the captain to make up a complete list of all on board passengers and crew on entering a foreign port. Details include name, age, point of embarkation, nationality, home address etc.

Yes they do, it's not unheard of. Usually through bad weather or strikes. Not so much where a large country is involved (eg USA) but many a time where an unscheduled diversion takes you to another country entirely - eg. the Mediterranean, Caribbean etc.

Of course the key question is the ship could dock, but could anyone embark?

The Spanish Embassy sounds your best bet as opposed to this forum.

From booking with lateratinfestedrooms.com and flying off the following day without a care in the world to visiting an embassy 200 miles away armed with statements weeks in advance and hoping they let you in.

Now, when did Farage/Gove/Johnson/Mum mention that? Hmm, even if I were a Brexit fan that alone would turn me off....

Hopefully it doesn't get down to that; but the way things are going gawd knows what's gonna happen.

I agree, I have worked there and enjoyed licensed hostelries in that fine town, often not at the same time.

Oi! No need to be rude about Bognor! You're only allowed to do that if you've been there, and if that makes me an elitist then so be it

It seems to be founded on some odd assumption that post Brexit UK citizens will need visas costing 60 euros to visit France as tourists. UK citizens have visa free access as to short term tourists to over 170 nations and only 27 of them are EU members.

The thought that France would require UK citizens to have visas a for tourism purposes post Brexit is barmy - citizens of Vanuatu and Costa Rica don't so why would they require this of one of their biggest sources of tourism.

We maybe leaving the EU but the chance of UK citizens needing visas to visit EU nations purely for tourism purposes for their two week annual holiday is about zero.

What's the betting our spanish chums will want to get some concessions from the UK over Gibraltar in return for them being "co-operative"? You can probably apply the same approach to other EU countries, and assuming the UK plays hardball (which apears to be the case) I fail to see how we will end up with any agreement about anything! Yes it will also hurt EU countries but the UK will be the biggest looser.

Around 7 million Brits holiday in Spain each year and spend a shedload of money there. We account for one in four tourists to the country.

Imposing visas would be an insanity on their part - even the Spanish aren't going to cut off their nose to spite their face.

In the end money talks and we Brits provide an awful lot of it to Spain.

And of course in the unlikely 1 in a million event there are visas imposed on UK tourists to Spain perhaps we should try holidaying in the other 150plus nations outside the EU that don't require us to have visas to go there. Many are a lot cheaper too!
