Increasingly tempted by the reduced prices of new large screen 4K HDR televisions, my desire to buy is being held back by an ever increasing (and confusing!) array of HDR format standards which are being touted - Dolby Vision, HDR10, Technicolor and now HLG! HLG has been developed by the BBC and Japan's NHK so stands a good chance of becoming widely used.

And according to wikipedia, it looks like this is starting to happen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_Log-Gamma

The latest W series of OLED tvs from LG supports all four standards including HLG but I don't know of any others. So my question is this - does anybody know whether, say an HLG format image can be displayed by a non-HLG engineered tv? Does it require different hardware inside making it impractical to do so? Or could it be implemented by a firmware upgrade?

HLG productions/broadcasts are fully backwards-compatible with all UHD TVs. HDR TVs will display HDR broadcasts in HDR; SDR UHD TVs will display in SDR.

HLG - BBC Have a read of the excellent FAQ that is linked to on there. It's been developed also to make life easier and cheaper for TV production in UHD.

HLG will need to be built into a TV or if possible be added by a firmware upgrade.

The 2017 LG sets have it built in with three other HDR formats.

My 2016 LG has HDR10 and Dolby Vision, but an upgrade to HLG hasn't been confirmed yet or whether it's even possible.

Looks like I'm going to be holding fire then as any commitment to provide firmware updates to existing products seems uncertain at best.

I beg to differ, based on what the BBC has said (link above). And I prefer what the BBC says to what some random journailist has written.

HLG also has native compatibility with standard dynamic range (SDR) television within the same colour format, which can be used for ultra-high definition (UHD) SDR displays.
The firmware upgrades you mention may be needed only to support HDR via HLG. SDR fallback via HLG HDR broadcasts appears, from the BBC, to be standard for all UHD TV sets. Granted, there is room for differing interpretations, but that's how I read it anyway. It would be good to see from the BBC or ITU some specific clarification on that point, however.
