Spitting on the floor...why does anyone do this??
Whilst out and about in town the other day, I saw some girl clear her throat & then launch a huge wad of spit onto the ground...why does anyone do this?? Like do people not realise the germs it can spread?? Has to be the most revolting thing anyone could do

I think it depends on the situation. I sometimes do it if I'm running or cycling; clears the throat (especially if a fly has just invaded my mouth). People may do it who have colds too; save swallowing whatever it is to bring it back up again.
Providing it's not done in public, or at the inconvenience of others, or an inconvenience to oneself (such as spitting whilst cycling into a headwind only to have the spit come back at you) I don't see a huge problem with it. |

Even if it did not constitute a hazard to others, it is pretty unpleasant to have to witness someone spitting out a large mouthful of phlegm or mucus. |

The other day a guy drinking in my local, urinated in the smoking area, despite a perfectly good toilet being available to him specifically for this purpose. Broad daylight, a couple people smoking away and he quietly goes into the corner and relieves himself without fuss or shame. |

Well when I was growing up in the seventies it was almost a sport for the lads(I cannot remember any girls doing it), so I guess in part things don't change. Whatever it was, I found it (even with the peer pressure) disgusting and never did it. The sight of someone trying to "gob up the snottiest greeny" and leave it on a wall or pavement is something I would love to be able to unsee.
Have to agree its dreadful. Why why why! |

If you have to clear your throat from mucus, you can do it discreetly...not in the middle of the road. Plenty of people in all cultures (lacking any of it) do it. Hate that, and hate when they throw rubbish in the street

I've always suspected that spitters see their football hero's doing it thus think it's hard and cool.

Choking is the only excuse for it, anything else is just gross.

Also some just think that being as disgusting as possible makes them 'ard. Probably raised by wolves. |

It's a sign of having no class, hence why you see footballers spitting all the time.

If people need to spit, they should spit into a tissue. When I walk upstairs at my local train station, it's like everyone's playing 'dodge the spit' because it's all over the floor. ![]() Don't even get me started on those who loudly hawk up spit in their throats before spitting. |

If in town, all these people need to do is find a roadside water drain and spit into that, but I'm not surprised some people do what you've said, as some are too lazy to put a can or bottle into a bin literally feet away and just leave them in the street or on a wall. |

It's probably because spitting up into the air is unpredictable at the very best. At least it's not as bad as foreigners (and calm down, because it REALLY IS foreigners) who hold one nostril closed whilst firing the contents of the other one onto the pavement.

As for spitting mucus or sputum, I was winding down from a chest infection once, and had a constant irritation at the top of my chest, just below my throat. The only way to clear this was to cough, this inevitably produced a small amount of mucus every time. I carried a couple of packets of tissues, and would turn my back and spit the mucus into a tissue, transferring this to a small plastic bag in my jacket pocket. At the first opportunity I would dump the plastic bag into a refuse bin, but there were many occasions when it really would have helped to have spat it out on the street, but I never did, I couldn't stand the thought that people would label me as disgusting. |

Because they're dirty scutters. They should be made to like it up off the pavement. Every last drop.
