I'm a long distance runner and don't spit. Footballers are good examples of spitters because that's all you see during a match. Even the managers stand there with a constant supply of phlegm pouring out.

Because they're disgusting little cretins.

This is one of my pet hates. It's disgusting. Having to manoeuvre my dog around it so she doesn't walk in it grinds my gears too when we are out walking. Some people just have no respect.

It's revolting and completely unnecessary, any excuses are bullshine. Tissues people! Use them.

Yeah, I can't quite grasp why the managers feel the need to spit.

Tennis players do it as well. It's disgusting.

I was cross country champion in my year and even when I had a bad chest I never spat once. I may have used a tissue now and then. Other people from my class could be heard spitting for England. Perhaps they put more effort into creating the perfect loogie and propelling it out than running.

I can only assume no one on this thread has ever had a really bad chest cold when the only relief you get is clearing your chest with a good 'hawwwwwk' or cough. Whilst I wouldn't spit it on the ground or near anyone else I will not hesitate to sidle over to the gutter/drain and eject it. There's no way I'm swallowing it and I think putting used hankies in your pocket is more disgusting than spitting in the gutter.

I agree in the case of a fly in the mouth, not for any other reason. I don't carry tissues, and am highly reactive to some fly/insect stings, so need to get rid asap, no faffing. Otherwise it's just gross.

It's really not.

Surely you meant "footballers"?

Whenever I'm out and about in my area these days I invariably encounter a huge dollop of phlegm and spit on the pavement somewhere.

I find it truly vile. In over 30 years of life I have never felt the need to spit on the ground while I'm out and about. Not while out jogging. Not while unwell. Never.

Those making excuses for the practice are just excusing selfish, lazy and antisocial behaviour.

And I see more and more people doing it these days, especially the young lads who think that spitting randomly as they walk down the street makes them look tough to any random bystanders who happen to be in the vicinity at the time.

It's just pathetic and antisocial.

Of course it is, just because you don't like it doesn't make it true. A snot filled hanky in your pocket is more disgusting than doing what nature intended imo.
Unless you're putting your shoes in your mouth or walking on your hands of course. There are much worse things on the street than a bit of catarrh in any case.

Don't be silly.

Sorry, I should have said in the public eye; more difficult when cycling in a group, but then it's more when I find that I find the need, and I typically run all over the place (more footpaths and pavements than fields though). Either way, I try to make sure I'm not amongst a crowd when I do it.

Nope, not unless I'm genuinely blowing my nose (because I have a cold) but that's always into tissue.

I find myself in agreement here.

It's not.

First of all, the snot is inside the hanky/tissue. You don't have to touch it at all. And at the first appropriate moment you can dispose of it.

Secondly, it's your own bodily fluids, in your own pocket. You're not spitting it all over the place where other people walk and in the sight of other people.

You're not inflicting your own disgusting habits on everybody else.

Yeah. And the people who leave it there are considered antisocial and selfish, just like those who spit their disgusting phlegm on the street for no reason should be.

Do you really think a 2 ply tissue is going to stop bacteria from getting on the inside of your pocket? It really won't. It's much safer to spit into a bin or a drain or something - even medical professionals recommend it.

It'll do a good enough job until I find the nearest bin.
