Very sad news that this woman has died aged 51.

She suffered horribly, but went on to campaign for rape victims. Anyone who can remember the event and the trial will be sorry that this wonderful woman has died at just 51.

RIP Jill

Awful case for so many reasons.

51 is no age. RIP

Sad loss.

Brave woman and thoroughly decent sort.

RIP Jill.

I remember this case well. Such a brave woman and how tragic for her to lose her life at such a young age. Very sad.

I remember that - she was cool and tough and kept her head together. Very brave woman.

I feel sad that she's died so young.

I just finished her book called Rape My Story. It's a difficult read but I was left with nothing but admiration for her. That's very sad news.

A great woman who made strength for others from her own suffering and who died too young. RIP.

Someone who really made things better for others. Gone far too soon.

Bit shit that all the headlines are calling her "rape victim Jill Saward" rather than "awesome campaigner Jill Saward", though. Pretty sure I can guess which way she'd rather be remembered, and which was more important. We didn't get "racism victim Nelson Mandela", after all.

Anything but a victim imo. RIP to a strong and courageous lady who overcame her ordeal and helped so many people.

I used the BBC headline for this post - and questioned myself about it.

The problem is if I had just used her name, how many people would have known who she was?

Hopefully, with the title, people will click on the bbc link and understand what Jill did after her rape.

Excellent point.

Agreed not OP's fault.

There is a quote from her about her 'title'

"Ealing vicarage rape victim - that's been my tag for the past 18 years... I make no complaint about this tag as it has enabled me to challenge politicians and work for change."

Great admiration for Jill in making something positive for many out of her own personal horrendous and appalling experience.
Tragic that she has died so young.
RIP.

A brave woman and such a young woman to die so early in life. May she rest in peace.

"At the end of the trial of her rapists, Old Bailey judge Mr Justice Leonard said her trauma “had not been so great”, sparking outrage.
He was censured for the remark and apologised for it later in his life.
“That reflected how little understanding there was,” she later said."

It was the sort of comment an asshole that hadn't followed the case may have come out with in the four ale bar. This judge had sat through every piece of evidence on the horror of what she had gone through. He should have lost his job never mind being censured.

To add insult to injury, of the gang of 3 the only man who didn't rape her got the longest sentence. He later apologised and she told him he didn't need to. What a woman.

She was incredibly brave to go public with details of her assault in the 1980s. That was not a 'touchy feely' era and was long before social media and people baring all on in TV interviews, things tended to be swept under the carpet. She did a great service to other rape victims by bringing it out into the open.

So young, very sad.
