Do you still use a standard DVD Player?
My dad reckons these are out of fashion now, but do people still use standard DVD players to watch films, comedy DVDs, etc, or simply the DVD function on a Playstation 3 for instance?
I insist on buying a new DVD player. We have an old one but it's at least 14 years old and I don't see the point in using it to play high definition content. My dad insists I use the Playstation 3's DVD function but I find it far too complicated and I'd much rather use a dedicated DVD player. So I need some good arguments! |

Just buy a remote for Bluray/DVD playback if you find using the game controller complicated.
The PS3 is still one of the better players out there IMO, why buy something else, I'm with your Dad. |

Haha very funny! I have just resurrected my old Pioneer PL 12D turntable to play some of my old vinyl albums I hadn't listened to for a decade or more. Very nice, and the artwork and inserts in some of them, marvellous.
Blu Ray players are pretty inexpensive now so I have one of them and tend to put Blu Rays on my birthday and Christmas lists for family to get me, they do too! Plus maybe, maybe not, the occasional new HD or 4K foreign release potentially 'acquired' *cough* when stupid movie companies delay releases for ridiculous lengths of time here in the UK. Certainly tempting, anyway. I use streaming subscriptions too but physical definitely has its place. |

OP I wouldn't buy a standard DVD player as you'd just be wasting your money, especially as your PS3 plays DVD as well as Blu-ray. As Night Crawler said just buy a remote for your PS3.

I would go for a Blu-ray player rather than a DVD so you can play Blu-rays as well. I have my PS3, PS4 and Blu-ray player under the TV. My Blu-ray is multi-region for both DVD and Blu-ray which is a necessity for me, so using a console isn't a viable option.

I have a Durabrand DVD Player (model number DVD 2005) bought from Asda in 2006 which I didn't realize at first plays Region 1 DVD's with no trouble, My mothers Philips Blu Ray player (model number BDP3000/05) which is newer can't, I wonder if there is a way of getting it to work multi Region

As I see it there are two parts to this question. The first part is
As I see it the answer lies in two parts: (1) Is a standalone DVD player better than any of the alternatives: (2) What's better to use; a PS3 or something else? The DVD player market is pretty much dead. That means that what is out there in terms of new hardware isn't that great. For that reason alone I wouldn't buy a standalone DVD player. I think there are better alternatives. So now we come to the question about those alternatives. PS3 + the Bluetooth remote isn't a bad shout if you want to keep the budget low. The pro's are that it's one box under the telly (and one HDMI cable), and because you already own it then the cost to add some user convenience in the form of the remote is low too. Con's for me are (1) the fan noise - Depending on the model you have there's plenty of hits on Google about PS3s being noisy because they're scaling SD DVD to match their HD setting. (2) A PS3 can never be region free for DVD; they're just too locked down. (3) Cineavia - Sony's attempt at blocking content from unofficial (cough cough) sources. For the above reasons I'd go with a Blu-ray player. It may not be so important to you but it's worth mentioning that it's fairly easy to get hold of Blu-ray players that will play any region of DVD. |
