EE - Martin and 'Chelle
Don't know how much longer I can put up with these two. They are being unbelievably annoying.
Martin has annoyed me pretty much since day 1 with this current actor and Michelle has annoyed me from the first second with this new actor. They are arseholes but I suppose it is realistic because some people just are. |

They were not even close way back then . Martin is 20 years younger or so than Michelle . She barely knew him

The 'Mum/Dad used to do this' stuff could definitely be toned down. It reminds of of the hideous Daniel and Madison Robinson in Neighbours who only ever existed to name drop their famous parents (Scott and Charlene) into every possible conversation.
I'm sure it will wind in eventually (it never did with the aforementioned Robinson siblings), but at the moment, it just seems like a forced attempt to drill home the idea of the Fowlers still being a force in Albert Square. The stuff with Stacey and Michelle is very cartoonish too, there's no WAY Michelle isn't picking up on how much she is annoying Stacey in her own home right now. It's actually making me think Michelle has some kind of personality disorder it's getting so OTT. |

I'm not understanding the whole timeline thing. I used to watch Enders when Pauline had Martin and Michelle was a teenager then, hanging out with Sharon, Kelvin and Ian and then getting pregnant by Den. She never had a relationship with Martin as he was a baby and certainly not one they can discuss and remember fondly now. All this rubbish about hanging out in the allotment and Boil washing sheets - as if Martin would remember that or have cared back then.

But her current behaviour could all be a front. We know she has a secret. Something big must've brought her back to Walford after all this time. That episode coming up with Michelle/Sharon could be a seminal moment for the recast. |

Michelle left the show in 1995 when Martin would have been 10, so it's not completely implausible that he would remember that time fondly.

Michelle did interact with Martin, maybe not extensively since Pauline and Arthur were around and she had Vicky but there was interaction. I remember her looking after him sometimes. It’s not unreasonable to assume they’ve grown closer in recent years following the deaths of their brother (Michelle and Mark were close) and mum. Martin went to stay with Michelle for a bit last year and I recall a reference to him visiting her with Sonia after they left the Square in 2007. |

Despite thinking I'd be ok with a Michelle recast I am struggling. Not sure if it's just the actress or not. She just doesn't seem to fit the character she's playing, whether it be Michelle Fowler or if she was a completely new character

They are carrying on like they were kids together and they really were not
DigitalSpy Forums are a minefield of idiocy anyway but with this one I'm really struggling to understand what you're on about. No where in tonight's dialogue between the two was it insinuated by either Michelle or Martin that they were together or of the same age in the memories they were recalling. You're forgetting that, while not similar in age, they're still the children of the same parents, so while neither grew up together or experienced their parents idiosyncrasies at the same time, they did experience them at some point in their lives growing up - and even at separate intervals, it's at least worth chatting about. Some of you just really love a good moan. I mean, fair enough that you don't like the new Michelle recast but to imagine or heighten what is actually happening onscreen because it fits the anti rhetoric is somewhat ridiculous. And because I'm bored and some of you still don't get it. Here's a bit of the dialogue between the two from tonight: "Remember the hours dad used to spend up here?" "Yeah..." (He does remember - that doesn't mean he was close in age to Michelle or remembering it happening the same time as she did. It literally just means that at some point he did remember. He literally just says "yeah". It's not like he's saying "omg yeah I know EXACTLY what you mean because we were there at the same time when it happened." Like, no. Just no. |

Michelle was always a pretty switched-on, self-aware, spiky character. I think the writing for this new incarnation has been weak, just to force a rift between her and Stacey. I'm willing to give her time though. |

It feels like a cheesy and desperate attempt to try and put the Fowler's back at the forefront. It isn't working because Pauline, Arthur and Mark are no longer around and both Michelle and Martin are recasts.
I've always found Martin bland and dull, but I suppose that is just his character. NEW Michelle however, is awful. There was absolutely no need to recast the character. She should have been left well in the past. Why turn up randomly after all this time, after missing numerous family funerals, and all the drama with Grant and Mark last year? It's pointless. I don't see her as Michelle and I don't think many other people do either. It is not the actress' fault at all though, I must add. Watching her and Sharon on Christmas Day felt so forced. It just didn't work in my opinion. It would be like watching Ian with a recasted Jane in 10 years time. Recasting minor/younger characters is fine, but recasting an iconic character who we watched grow in to a woman, is unnessecary. The conversations about the past are also horribly contrived and boring. Trying way too hard. |

Pauline did go and stay wth Michelle a few times as well, taking Martin with her and we don't know how much contact they had during the years he wss living away following Paulines death. He felt close enough to her to go there when he learnt he wasn't Arthur's father last year. So, I can accept there has been a significant offscreen relationship over the last 20 years. People do still talk even when living on different continents. Especially if they are the only members of tge nuvlear family left like thise two following Arthur, Mark and Paulines deaths. |

I do also think a bit of rose tinted spectacles goes on after parents deaths as well, recounting family occasions and traditions, sometimes not accurately, and Michelle us doing that with Martin just going along with it. Possibly because he doesn't remember things that well (he was only 10 when Arthur died) and likes hearing stories and feeling included. |

Just said very similar before reading this.

Possibly because he doesn't remember things that well (he was only 10 when Arthur died) and likes hearing stories and feeling included. But then, other than Mark who she told before she left, I don't believe Michelle would have confided that to anyone, especially a Mitchell which is why the letter to Peggy nonsense jarred so much last year. I don't agree with this idea that Michelle 'didn't know' or have anything to do with her own brother while on screen. It's blatantly not true. But she did leave when Martin was still a child and I don't remember James A's Martin going to see her in the States (the first mention of Martin being in America with her I recall was in the Santer years). So when Martin came out with that to Pauline, it didn't feel right. |

It is a bit strange as Michelle was way more switched on than she's coming across at the moment.
But her current behaviour could all be a front. We know she has a secret. Something big must've brought her back to Walford after all this time. That episode coming up with Michelle/Sharon could be a seminal moment for the recast. My speculation is after the fallout with Mark's paternity coming out her husband and son effectively ganged up and have both fallen out with her, which is hardly surprising. As a result she's fully hamming up her London family to either compensate or deal with her own nuclear family falling apart. |

So who has been paying the fees for the allotment for all those years since Arthur died?
