I would say television was better twenty years ago. Well even ten years ago. I just think with so many channels i would have to say there are too many of them and just not enough quality

If I see an hour of telly a week that's good going for me. I think I probably watched a bit more years ago. Whether or not that has anything to do with the quality of the programmes or my preference for 'interactive media' I'm not sure.

I think it's rubbish, too many channel full of reality/celeb programmes/dumbed down/repeat comedies/atoi many chefs abd no new worthwhile new ideas etc. I prefer radio and watch TV abd generally "Meh" bored

Well now home entertainment was my baby's wish
So I hopped into town for a satellite dish
I tied it to the top of my Japanese car
I came home and I pointed it out into the stars
A message came back from the great beyond
There's fifty-seven channnels and nothin' on

Thank God for BBC4

They've taken all the decent stuff and put it in one place so we don't need to channel surf

And your right. Some days there is hardly anything on when there is over a hundred channels to choose from

I'm inclined to say it's better - outwith bake off, towie rubbish. Things like Night Manager etc are superb. I can't think of much mid 90's that was particularly good.

As fas as I'm concerned, there's no need to take it off. I simply ignore it, and it has no impact on my life whatsoever.

I think I might have misinterpreted "outwith" as "out with"

I seriously cannot see how anyone can say tv was better 10 years ago. The major terrestrial tv channels are still producing quality tv programs. On top of that you have Satellite TV/Freevies which most people now have and which have just grown over the last 10 years. Add on Netflix and Amazon Prime which give you a huge back catalogue of tv and films from the last few decades and are now making their own big budget tv shows. Most TVs now give you On Demand e.g. BBC Iplayer as well as the ability to put what you are watching on hold while you make a cuppa or record a whole tv series by the simple press of a button.

Give me tv now any day over tv 10 years ago - just no competition.

Our friends in the north. (BBC. 1996)

Often considered one of the greatest British dramas of all time.

I'll give you my experience. When there where only 4/5 channels (analogue), I'd sometimes watch things like Eastenders and The Bill, because there was nothing else on. Nowadays I have so many channels I can only watch a small fraction of it and I haven't watched a soap like the ones I've mentioned above for at least 15 years.

Channels I watch regularly,

Crime and Investigation
Investigation Discovery
Discovery History
National Geographic
Nat Geo Wild
Animal Planet
Eden
History
H2
PBS America
Sky Sports
Gold
Comedy Central
Comedy Central Extra
NHK World

for example.

Good point, well made. Cracker too. I do think in general tv was awful in the 90's though.

Hear hear. And for the legacy of supporting the OU all those years ago.

Perhaps, not quite what Sir John Reith hoped it would be. Lots of ''improving'' serious drama, light music, and endless presbyterian church sermons on sundays .......

One day over the holidays I managed to watch Judge Judy most of the day by channel surfing. It's on about 5 different channels. Sometimes simultaneously.

The good Judge must be a very rich lady.
