As for William the Conqueror, he shouldn't be "forgiven", whatever that even means in an historical context, he should be looked at honestly. Do you get taught that in history lessons, or is it just a load of old ballix about the Domesday Book and how the Normans brought civilisation to a previously backward nation? One of his nicknames was William the Bastard, and looked at honestly, it suits him.
