Recording from Samsung TV USB output

I am about to buy a Samsung UE22H5600 Smart TV which has a USB output. The spec
indicates that this can be used for recording and playback of TV programmes.
There appear to be differing opinions as to whether this may be accomplished
by means of a USB Memory Stick or via en external hard drive. From a space
point of view I would like to use a stick but am unsure of value - thinking that
a 64GB would be more than ample for a couple of one hour programmes per
week. I invite comment/advice.

The documentation on the Samsung website (typically) is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. The "installation manual" shows a picture of the back of the set with all the connections and next to the USB sockets is a picture of a USB stick, implying it can use sticks but perhaps not USB hard drives.

Then you read the "e-manual" and it says the exact opposite, no USB sticks only hard drives! So your guess is as good as mine!

Mind you if you do use some sort of USB storage device for recording then it is likely that you won't be able to use that device anywhere else. The TV formats the device and locks it to that specific TV. So you can't make a recording and take the drive to a computer or even another TV of the exact same make and model to watch the recording back. You might not even be able to use the drive to copy videos from a computer to playback on the TV.

Pretty sure you'll need a external hard drive, 160GB minimum capacity - USB sticks are normally read only. That's how it works on the TV's I use, though different makes to Samsung.

I have an older Samsung TV and I record stuff on a USB stick now and again. You just have to make sure the USB stick has write speeds capable of recording HD TV. I think it's 8-10mbs or there abouts. The TV will 'test' the USB stick when you set it up for recording.
An hour of HD TV takes up about 3gb if I recall correctly.

If you plug in a USB stick it will check it and tell you if it can be used, afaik it is the speed at which data can be transferring to it which is the key issue. If it can't handle the required rate it will reject it. Most reports I've seen recommend using an external drive.
