I put this here rather than movies as it's only about a specific part. A great movie and many have no doubt watched it numerous times, but one scene has always puzzled me.

When Andy makes his escape through the cell wall, an angry Warden Norton called to his cell by the guards fumes "Lord it's a miracle, man went and vanished like a fart in the wind.." then pointing to the poster of Raquel Welch, "well what say you fuzzy breeches?" and starts throwing the stones Andy carved around the cell and then at the poster - where one goes straight through which is when Warden Norton rips away the poster to see the gaping hole Andy chiseled out.

But how did the poster get stuck back on the wall after Andy had gone?

Cheers, I was going to watch this tonight for the first time.

The poster is attached at the top only like a curtain so Andy doesn't need to reattach it once he's gone through. Or something.

The bottom left corner of the poster was not stuck down. I presume he stuck it back on three corners from inside the hole, but had to leave that one.

In the book it's attached at the top and left to drop down over the hole, If I remember

You must be only person who hasn't seen it twenty plus times!

It's a good movie though. All time classic.

It's the 'or something' bit that's got me too. Nice curtain theory though!

I can't see how he'd manage to get through without tearing or disturbing it. Though he wasn't by any means large built he wasn't a thin little chap either. I'm still baffled!

I’ve watched it once, and once only, many years ago;

…the bit where he finally escapes is good,…but it’s not one of Clint Eastwoods best performances.

Same for me. The character acting is superb, Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman and also Bob Gunton as the Warden, but also smaller parts like "Tommy" or the old man.

Lots of interesting clips on YT such as this one with Bob Gunton meeting tourists at Shawshank.

And the Ohio State Reformatory as it once was. https://www.mrps.org/

I'm pulling your leg, I've seen it 100 times

Andy, being as meticulous as he is, crawls head first down the tunnel to drop off his little bag and rope, then heads back up the tunnel with a bit of bent coat hanger wire from when he was put in charge of cleaning Warden Norton's suits. He gets to the tunnel entrance, and feeds his U shaped piece of wire carefully under the poster, then twists it, pushing the corner of the poster back onto the blu-tac. Then he wriggles backwards down the tunnel with the wire and escapes.

…why would I watch it again when I didn’t like it the first time ;…he should have stayed with those ‘Nasty Harry’ films, IMHO.

Especially as he wasn't in it!

Erm, because Eastwood wasn't in it, unless you were also having a leg pull?!!

Yes that's what I would have said as well.......... I'm sure you can see on the movement of it when he starts throwing the pebbles that it is not attached at all four corners,,....

Just in case any one really hasn't seen it

But...

Spoiler
I am convinced that it isn't really Tim Robbins in the final long range shot on the beach but a body double and was filmed as an afterthought after he had finished? Why would you film that scene from so far away??

Clint Eastwood never did that !;…you’re obviously thinking of the wrong film.

Is that the ones about the wizard school? Was that Clint Eastwood?! Blimey, he only looks about twelve in the first one. It's amazing what they can do with CGI these days.
