You can only hope it might work this time.

I wish him the best of luck with his recovery. I think he's a good man at heart.

I'm certainly sympathetic to anyone with an addiction as severe as his, but with someone like him, i think there has to be a point where you have to cut him loose because he'll likely be of the mindset that it doesn't matter if he falls off the wagon because someone else will just come along and send him to rehab all over again, so he's effectively getting a "free pass" to drink.

Either cut him loose and let him truly hit rock bottom with no immediate prospect of a return to rehab or go the other way and section him indefinitely until he is fully and completed withdrawn from alcohol dependency. I've read that "fans" often offer him booze which usually sets him off again, so why not take him away from that environment as well to help him ?

Ultimately, he's probably a 'lost cause' who will end up dying young like Best.

But still, we can hope for a better outcome...

I don't believe he has any intention of staying sober. He gets more attention being drunk.

Good luck to him but I do hope it' not a short stint until he dries out.
Gazza needs to get to get to the root of his problems, alcoholism only being part of them, imo & take it from there.
This, as he's proven time & time again won't be resolved by 4 or 6 weeks in a rehab clinic, he needs long term help. Never give up, I say.

Hope Gazza can beat his demons it can be done but it is a hard journey and he really needs to wants to beat the bottle and address his other problems, but i don't think deep down he wants to as he has had more opportunities than the majority of Alcoholics and Drug addicts put together and he still hasn't addressed his problems. I hope for Paul's sake that one day the penny finally drops and he changes his life around as it is never too late, it is only too late when you are laid to rest but he is getting closer and closer to that scenario every time he goes on another binge. For some Alcoholics the Penny never drops and they never beat it, somehow i think he will be one of those who never beats it, i hope he proves me wrong but i doubt it somehow.

Presumably apart from the wife-beating? Oh and the sectarian nonsense he got disciplined for at Rangers? And the racist jokes he's apparently been trying to hawk around some low-rent comedy circuit recently?

I feel compassion for anyone battling an addiction. But it doesn't make them a good person by any stretch. Gazza is a cretin, whether in an alcoholic haze or not. Nobody deserves to suffer from alcoholism, much less for it to be played out in front of the national tabloid press, coupled with whatever mental health issues he may have.

But a 'good person '? Absolutely not. He's Jim Davidson in a football strip, with considerably fewer brain cells.

Hes seems to be totally lacking a support network when he finishes rehab. Sadly, without one it will only be a matter of time until he slips back into his usual way

This, essentially.

& I personally think he's beyond help.

Sadly I have to agree with the posters who think Gazza is beyond help - either beyond or not ready to put in the hard work he needs to do to control his addiction.

My ex seemed to think his stint in rehab meant someone had waved a magic wand and made his problems disappear, not that he was learning to cope and manage his problems. When he lapsed it was because the rehab was 'rubbish' and other people had failed him. I kept my after-rehab appointments to learn how best to support him (and to get support for me) but he constantly made excuses and never kept his. When he lost control again, it was my fault for not supporting him. Or someone's fault for upsetting him in some way. Or the weather. Or something he'd seen on telly.

In the end I realised that 'I have a problem with alcohol and I need your help to beat it' often means 'I've told you about the problem so it's your responsibility and when I fail to do anything anout it, it'll be your fault'. That was when I ended the relationship. He didn't take any responsibility for the addiction and died 6 months later, aged 45. I feel no guilt, just immense sadness that someone with such a brilliant brain and lovely personality (if you could find him sober) was lost so soon.

I see the same pattern in Gazza and can't see him having a long and sober life ahead of him.

I thought he was worth several million or has it all been frittered away?

Where are his mates Baker and Evans or were they just of the 'fairweather' kind?

Well 2017 is bound to have some celebrity casualties and Gazza isn't helping to not be on the list.
Before I become accused of being heartless, I have experienced alcoholism in my family and its a pain in the arse all round. His damage is probably irreversible.

(Wouldn't want alcohol to be treated like other drugs, as despite what people say its the ones who want other nasty substances made legal that bleat the most.)
