My favoured schedule for the soaps would be:
Emmerdale - 19:00 Monday to Friday with hour-long Wednesday
EastEnders - 19:30 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
Coronation St - 20:00 Monday, Wednesday and Friday, each for an hour
No doubles, consistent start times all week and no clashes. Would require movement on both sides but I think has mutual benefit to ITV and the BBC, giving ITV 19:30 slot through the week for new formats and the BBC 20:00 hour. The networks have moved the shows before - EE started at 19:00 but eventually moved, etc. Times have changed since the current timeslots were introduced (almost double the episodes overall) and I see no reason why they can't be tidied up.
EE would benefit on Monday and Friday from being the gap between Corrie and Emmerdale, and ITV viewers would not have to put up with the double episodes and contrived cliffhangers. Corrie would only have 3 episodes a week but they would all be in hour-format to make up the 6 episodes worth ITV allow. This would allow for better scripting and structuring of episodes.
