“If ever a person came in wearing pink socks and defaulted on rent, and it became a regular problem, then we would stop renting to people who wear pink socks.””

Charming individual. I suspect he'll claim he's just being "honest" ..

You missed out 'families with children, pet owners, smokers, single adults and workers on zero hours contracts'.

The guy is a nut.

Plumbers he must be insane

Oh there's a laundry list of people he won't rent to. But then he's known in the area for being a terrible landlord anyway. I'm sure the "coloureds" won't be too worried about not renting from him I suppose.

He only wants childless couples who earn above £30k with a full time guaranteed job that doesn't involve plumbing. The people who usually buy which is unfortunate for him!

You misread that bit - "coloureds" along with "gays" and "lesbians" are fine - so long as they pay their rent!

I recall him being in the news before for a similar list - he is the architypal miserable landlord. But he and his missus are very successful at it.

it's pretty disgraceful that there are so many people seeking rented accommodation that he feels he can be so discriminatory

He excludes nearly everyone? Single adults, Single Mums, Single Fathers, Anybody with children under the age of 18. Who would want this dick as your landlord anyway?

Seems he's been selling up. He got rid of half of his properties last year.

To be fair to him, and he does come across as a bit of a dick, he is simply trying to weed out demographics that he sees as problem tenants or rip-off merchants. He has so many properties that the number of potential deadbeats renting from him and causing him problems is multiplied.

Landlords do get a lot of stick, but there are just as many renters who are an absolute pain in the arse.

This could be a good money earner for him, you see what he does is ban alot of people from renting off him, which increases homeless numbers, which alot of people the council have a duty to house them, so he rents the houses to the council who pay the rent and do repairs, and then the council put the banned people in the houses. He is known as a bit of a scum bag

If I were to rent a house out i'd love it to go to a plumber, if something went wrong with the pipes overnight you'd know the place wouldn't be a swamp by the time you got there!

What if they are a single mum, because they left their plumber husband who battered them?

the parent thing is partly about how long it takes to evict someone with a child, they are far more protected than those without (it mentions it briefly in the article)

he's pretty awful but in his defence it is being spun as being all about the status of the tenant not the legal implications

my post was more about how so many people are in a situation where renting is the only option

What it says is ( , but said that families and single parents pose a problem as it can take up to 13 months to get a possession order if he decides to sell.) which of cause selling means getting rid of good tenants as well

What if whilst the couple were a tenant the marriage ended due to him being a gay plumber and she had suddenly gone on zero hour contract.....

I would hope that everyone who might qualify to be on his "excluded list" will reciprocate and refuse to help him if he's ever in trouble. He might be surprised to find out how valuable some of those people are. Unless it's all a joke of course.

Can you rent privately owned properties directly to the council?

It's market forces
If he can find enough tenants to fill his properties who fit his approved list then his business will thrive
It is a business, not a social venture. As someone up thread mentioned not all tenants are good tenants

What if a couple split up whilst renting from him or she ends up pregnant?

He doesn't sound like the type of person who'd be too meek to boot them out.

Agreed.

Although he is an idiot for sharing (assuming he did), he is perfectly at liberty to select who he wants as tenants. When I used to rent a house, my stipulations were no smokers, no pets and no children under 16, once these are met, it's down to you as a landlord to make a judgement on the people when you meet them.

He says in the article that he's had problems with people from those groups before. It's completely logical, although most would probably not write it down.

Personally, and as a buy to let landlord myself, I do not blame him for excluding certain groups from renting property from him. As with me, he is not a charity and is in it to make money. I want to have a comfortable retirement and for my children to be on a sound financial footing. They stop paying the rent for whatever reason, and you lose out - unfortunately many people who rent could not care less so you have to take measures to protect your investment.

I will not let to anyone on benefits, with pets, young children, anyone without a verifiable employment history, criminal records, visible tattoos, poor credit history, smokers and certain other criteria, partially because previous experience has shown the property is more likely to be abused, and/or they often have difficulty paying the rent when circumstances change. Most other BTLers have similar criteria.

When you have around a dozen people applying for each property, you can afford to be selective, and will go for the safest option any time - why would you go for someone who is likely to cause issues?

I would not go as far as excluding plumbers - my best tenant is a plumber (from the Czech republic) - I guess he has been stung by one?
