Weng Chiang was afraid that Tom Baker's Doctor might be a Time Agent come to bring him back to his own time.

(Hmm... Didn't someone here say Captain Jack was from the 51st century? Nice touch at integrating the old and the new series.)”

Very interesting. I didn't remember that.

Sorry AM, I wasn't intending to belittle the act of killing. I was just (there I go, using 'just' again!, interesting how a word that I put in without any emphasis can be over-interpreted) trying to answer the original post by questioning whether what DW was doing was technically "torture", which to my mind it wasn't. OK, pedant moment over, back to tonight's episode...

IMO, it comes about 4th on the list of greatness (after TUQ, FD and D). Haven't voted yet as I'm going to wait until after I've seen it again in the dark (have to agree - bright sunlight kills the atmosphere!). Perhaps my expectations were raised too high? I thought the script lacked something but I can't put my finger on it. Richard Wilson, however, was excellent and his 'morphing moment' was a true 'sofa-jobbie' (it was seen as funny the last time I used that phrase - perhaps it still is?).

Much appreciated being given time to miss the 'next week' bit, though. Thank you, whoever listened to our pleas...

His ship and the equipment didn't seem too primitive from what we have seen so far but I get your point it might be in comparison to time technology that the Time Lords have/had.

Excellent, excellent, excellent. I think that whoever is doing the webstuff for this series deserves a mountain of credit.

A great episode tonight something scary for the kids (and adults)!

Re references to bad wolf this week - the planes were probably Focke Wulfs.

A few of Nancys' comments also could relate to CE being the bad wolf - around the dinner table she said "he should not be here either", and the near reference to "what a big nose he has" while on the train. CE also looked a bit shocked when Nancy said that he should speak to the Doctor; perhaps he was worried the real Dr Who was around!

AND Rose was wearing a hooded top again tonight - could be dark red, as it was not as obvious as previous episodes, although the red of her union jack shirt did seem to be prominent.

Can anyone tell me the exact line of dialogue was where the Doctor pointed to his nose and the girl responded with what SOUNDED like, 'Do Jews have special powers?'

Is that what was said??????

I liked the Doctor's speech about the plucky damp island saying 'not here' to the Germans.

I thought so too! Being Jew-ish, I thought it was a bit risky but, one has to remember that PC didn't exist in WWII so a comment like that would not have been seen as anything unusual.

I wouldnt count the union jack shirt, that was there for her "im hanging in midair with a union jack on my chest during the blitz" line.

The planes were bombers whereas Focke Wulf mostly made fighters.

Perhaps Steven Moffatt (the writer) wanted to highlight that there was a lot of anti Semetism stirred up in this country at the time by propaganda telling people to fear the Jewish community....that's if how the line in the episode went. I will have to watch the repeat later to see what exactly the line was.

Yep, quite possible. I believe there were a significant minority in Britain at that time who thought 'along the same lines' as Germany with regard to Jews (obviously not to the same extreme!).

Me too - and it was this comment following on from the comment about CE's nose that has been picked up as the Bad Wolf reference this week, so if it was Jews (which I'm sure it wasn't) then that theory goes right out of the window.

She said:

No mentions of Jews at all.

OK, enough people think it was something else. Time to put the subtitles on for the repeat showing to clear it up!

Well there seems to be a similar undercurrent of feeling going on in this country even now which I find completely abhorrent. I like the fact that DW is not afraid to raise issues like this from the past or topical ones like in Dalek with the parrallels that can be drawn with the torture scene and what is allegedly going on with Iraqi prisoner of war.

*edit: just read the above posts so there was no ref after all. I never heard it either but gave a reason to another FM as to why it might have been included if they had heard correctly.

This is a very interesting connection, and I can quite imagine that if RTD was going to use any if the old series as 'blueprints' it would be the Talons of Weng Chiang. It has often topped polls as the most favourite story and I can see similarites already with the new series and the style of that Tom Baker season

Yes i agree, i thought that was excellent and a moment which i hope moved a few people. That period of British history is one which is still evident around us in survivors and buildings, and I would guess it's a time that is massively significant yet still close enough for us to feel really connected to.
the Doctor's speech made me stop and think just quite how remarkable Britain's role in WW2 was

So if Time Agents are feared as Weng Chiang did in Talons are they some kind of 'bounty hunters' then?
