In the 'new adventures' there was also mention of bad wolf, just out of interest.

The 7th Doctor had taken a house on Allen Road as a base of operations in his 'long game' (some kids 'amusingly' changed the road sign to read 'Alien Road') and there was graffiti everywhere about bad wolf, big drawings of wolves, etc etc.

Although it had similarities, it was a different story to what's playing out on screen now. Interesting to note that RTD might have 'borrowed' some ideas from the books though, as I know he's read them.

I hope he doesn't return - he would ruin the Daleks (again!).

I meant the silhouette of the dalek as it goes but yeah, I agree with that Den although check out the photograph over RTD's shoulder under the dalek on this week's Confidential and you'll see the possibility has increased on that one!

The Doctor has always been seen as something of a renegade by his own people - he had the audacity to go off into the big wide universe instead of staying home like a good little Timelord.

I fear you may be right in that he may return - I believe it was Terry Nation himself who insisted on his appearance every time the Daleks were used? And I heard the Estate still continue to insist he is used whenever the Daleks are, although I'm hoping the BBC managed to get round that somehow.

Shada was unique until they used the clips in Five Doctors then it was erased from my personal Whoniverse...shame, nice story

RTD has stated that the books can only complement the TV show. As part of BBC rules the TV show must follow its own plot development and the books and merchandise can only complement this.

i.e. You don't have to spend money to follow the story. Therefore, you're right John that if it hasn't happened on screen, it hasn't happened at all. So the books are only deviations from the TV plot.

The only time I saw it (apart from when I bought it) was as part of a Doctor Who night, if I recall correctly. And you're right - a very nice story.

Pity it was never finished, but as you say, at least they used some clips in The Five Doctors.

His character in Genesis was FANTASTIC (sorry) and even in Destiny he was cool enough I just didn't like the degradation in the standard of make-up as I've said before nor the fact that he was turned into a panto villain without any real menace...it turned into a "how can we surprise the viewers with his appearance this time?" game hence the unconvincing school girl reveal in "Remembrance"...God, I may need that anorak after all...cheque please!

Sorry to confuse things Jim - the 'new adventures' and 'missing adventures' were official Doctor Who books which bridged the gap when McCoy went off screen.

The new books with the new DW logo do compliment the tv series, as you so rightly say, but are not essential reading to follow the new tv series.

That's nice to know as my Aunt's other half (nothing but the best sources here!) has pointed out one of the "new" or "missing" adventures that details the time war and destruction of Gallifrey (don't ask me which book) and I was slightly worried that I was going to start getting confused by details that were in all these but never made it to the screen...phew, my time line can remain pure then

I agree with you about Genesis, but can't help thinking it should have begun and ended there.

As you say, it was more of a "oh my god, they killed Kenny" contrivance every time they wheeled him out in later stories.

Sadly, with him on the scene, the Daleks totally lost their ruthless streak and were little more than 'drones' - totally destroying any power they once had to terrorise.

I like being terrorised once in a while, so I hope he stays where he belongs - firmly in the past.

Returning to the plot, such as it is, I've been racking my brains trying to recall if The Doctor has ever visited war time Britain before in the series and so far have come up blank...this could either be a mis-spent Class A youth coming back to haunt me or simply that he hasn't...anyone know if "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" is the first such foray?

Definitely Den - couldn't agree more. He was a perfect addition to the mythology at the time, but he later seemed to get "in the way" somehow of the story. I think if the Daleks take the direction that was hinted at in episode 6 - of being more fleshed out and individual, then there will be no need for any figurehead.
