UKTV - £70,000 for silent housemates
Laggy
25-05-2005
From bbc.co.uk: .

Quote:
“ ..A rival broadcaster is launching a "public spirited" attack on reality TV by offering £70,000 to Big Brother contestants if they refuse to speak during the 11-week series.

Satellite network UKTV said its prize was an attempt to "diminish the amount of mindless drivel generated by the deluge of reality TV shows".”

Does anyone else think that instead UKTV should spend the 70k on there OWN SCHEDULE to "diminish the amount of midless drivel?"

Its quite a clever tactic (not tic-tacticles).
They know full well no housemate will be able to stay silent for 11 weeks.
So in the end it dosn't cost them anything and it gets them publicity.

I personally dont understand what a low budget cable channel has against big brother. Sounds like a bit of jealously to me.

Isn't the point of any channel to get high viewer stats? Maybe UKTV should focus on getting thier own stuff working before they belittle something that is obviously a very popular successful format.

It's a good idea for free advertising.

Exactly! Its the stupidist thing I have heard anyway, the housemates will never hear of it, they are in hiding now.

Just what I was thinking.

Could the reason for the offer really be a chance to advertise their own channel?

If a housemate was silent for any real length of time, then I'd expect Big Brother to boot them out of the house and fetch a replacement pronto.

If one of them refuses to speak perhaps they will try and bribe them with Diet Coke and big cigars

I don't think you're meant to take it seriously, it's a publicity stunt like last year's paint drying thing.

A HM who doesn't talk for 11 weeks won't be interesting and therefore won't last 11 weeks: so therefore they won't get their money.

If they do last 11 week, then they will probably be the winner and then they won't need the £70,000

Good idea - NOT.

They would just get voted out by housemates and public, never make it 11 weeks!

Such irony when all UKTV do is cycle the same programmes from last week's BBC2 afternoon schedule every bloody day.

Imagine how funny it would be if no one spoke at all for 11 weeks.

This idea by UKTV is genius.

What's even more ironic is that UKTV is owned by the BBC, and it is the BBC who creates the Big Brother graphics!

http://www.bbcbroadcast.com/design/big_brother.shtml

So they are basically having a go at a programme that they do work for.

Not quite, it's owned by Flextech, and they have a kind-of joint venture going on with the BBC, to allow access to BBC shows, but it isn't owned by them. Didn't know that they did the graphics though.

Is this the same UKTV that show make-over shows?

Hypocritical is the first word that pops into my head.

Not quite! UKTV is 50/50 owned by BBC Worldwide and Flextech. Note that's not the same as the BBC that run the channels we watch. BBC Broadcast although owned by the BBC is a limited company in itself, so although the name BBC crops up everywhere, they are all different organisations.
