I'm just wondering if it's worth buying one of the Freeview boxes someone mentioned here for about £45. Any suggestions on what to buy? The main reason of course is that my hubby and I argue every year as he hates BB and I want peace to watch it when I want.

I have a question for any techies. I've got an old Philips On Digital box upstairs and use it sometimes to watch ITV2. I've never really tried to tune into anything else as I think you had to subscribe and this is no longer available. Is this like freeview and if I do a scan will I get any of these channels? Sorry for being such a thicko. ”

Your old OnDigital box IS a freeview box!

To update it, simply go to "Add Channels" and let it scan for all the channels. You'll get 30odd TV channels and quite a few radio ones, and you don't have to pay a penny.

Wow! Thank you for that. I'm going to muck about with the settings right now. I hope I can find the remote control for it. Here goes.

Some boxes will also ignore pay-TV channels... as E4 is still on Top Up TV, the best thing to do is to re-scan after 6am on Friday... by then, E4 will be a free channel, E4+1 should have started broadcasting, and 705 will probably be broadcasting (even if it's only a blank screen!)

Hope this helps,

Bozz”

*Thumbs Up* - Totally helpful, Bozz!

Thank you

E4+1 is actually playing something now, so those of you that couldn't get it to tune in before, or that want to see it, try now.

Yes, I've picked up E4+1 now it's got output (all the E-Stings back to back) - but still not picked up the 705 channel on my Sagem, though got it on our Setpal.

Great news that we'll get the 24/7 stream (I think - maybe the enforced break would be better) as E4 scheduled suggested BB Live would be off air from around 3.30pm to 11pm, except for an hour at 6pm.

Just scanned for new channels on my Philips Freeview box in the bedroom and am picking up E4, E4+1 and Channel 705 which is still to be named. E4 is still saying that it is top up t.v. but this should change tomorrow. Wouldn't get rid of Sky though as the reception for freeview in our area is not that great besides my husband and kids love Sky 1.

Well based soley on this thread, I did a rescan and 14 is still TUTVed (i.e.) showing it as a subscription service) 39 is E4 + 1 (showing a variety of bizzarre idents) and 705 showing not a lot.

SOOOOOO come BB 14 E4, 39 for E4 + 1, just in case you missed anything and possibly hopefully 705 is interactive stream or is it going to be another text service.

You *may* need to rescan tomorow again to get the free version of E4

I still can't receive Freeview

As soon as I can though, I will be ditching Telewest and their £20+ per month subscription charge!

The higher up your aerial is the better you will receive Freeview, so you should be alright as long as you're not on the ground floor.

With a portable aerial you will need to make sure it is pointing towards the transmitter in order to get all the channels. You can check the approximate compass bearing of your nearest transmitters from
http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tvd.exe?DX=L&OS=
and put in your postcode.

The aerial amplifier may be more of a hinderance than a help as it may cause or increase interference to the signal. If you're using one of those ring aerials that come with portable TV's it won't be good enough, you need one that is like a smaller version of a rooftop aerial. Any aerial of this type should be suitable as they are all wideband.

Ive got a bad feeling where all getting our hopes up for the 24/7 stream on channel 705 and nothing has been confirmed by channel 4. I would love the 24/7 stream but im not building my hopes up to much because in the end it might not be a 24/7 stream.

With nothing confirmed I wouldn't get too exited about a 24/7 stream - even the original poster is now unsure.

It could be that 705 is just holding the new 24 hr stream E4 will use on ch 14 until the current Top Up TV service ends tonights.

I posted earlier that I had an old Philips On Digital box in my bedroom that I rarely use except for ITV2. Someone suggested that I do a scan for new channels.

It found 23 new channels, including channel 705. Only thing is I keep getting red squares or dots as the reception is really bad. I have the TV and digi box linked by scart and my ariel is like the one mentioned above..a mini roof type one. I took this out of the telly and put it into the white booster box that I bought to try and get a reception. The booster is connected to the digi box.

Is there anything else I can do to try and get a reception? I'm getting no red square on ch 705, just a black screen.

I tried rescanning my Freeview box in the bedroom, and it found E4+1 and another weirdly named channel. But as my Goodman cheap box is not capable of receiving TopUp TV, will it still be able to get channel 14 tomorrow? Are they changing it somehow to suit all boxes?

Now when you mention it, one of the channels I was on said something about E4 being TopUP TV. What is TopUP TV, do you have to pay for this? I thought the channels were free. Jeez I'm getting more confused by the minute here.

You do have to pay if you want the topuptv channels but e4 is completely free from 6am in the morning.

I am the original poster, and in fact when I made this thread I was unsure, but now I am nearly certain. I dont know what gave you any other ideas.

Phone up Channel Four Press Office.

It shouldnt be a text service, there isn't much point in having a placeholder for that. For example Teletext on Four is just avalible by pressing text, there is no placeholder.

Therefore it must be some sort of stream.

As it is in the 700s, it must be an interactive stream.

Considering it arrived at this time, you can bet on a connection to Big Brother.

It is possible that it is E4, but why would they bother themselves putting it on in the 700s, when they just need to change it on Friday Morning. Nothing is to be gained from putting it there until TUTV finishes with 14.

Im pretty sure it will be, but even if it isn't Im just happy I have E4.

most GOODMANS can recieve TUTV channels. go to configuration in the menu, and choose YES to SCAN ENCRIPED CHANNELS, then scan the channels again, and TUTV channels will appear. Useless of cource, but you will be able to see E4.

Probably because its not broadcasting anything yet try in the morning, would expect them to be broadcasting test signals or sommat when they launch e4 and e4+1.
