When Craig confronted Nick in BB1 he said:

"I said, not just to them, but to five million people, that I wanted to spend the rest of the duration with you"

How did he know how big the show was when he was still in the house?

I think as the weeks went by on BB1, the contestants had a idea that the show was probably doing OK - remember, they could look outside the door and see outside the house on eviction nights. I think they used to get quite excited by the growing crowds, but still had no concept of the huge success it was.

Craig would have had no idea on the amount of people watching. BB had been a success in Germany prior to BB1 airing here - maybe he was basing his judgement on their viewing figures?

Probably, he just said it in the 'heat of the moment'.

The clip was shown on The Top 20 Housemates last night and I couldnt understand how he would know, so I thought I would ask on here, obviously I should have waited 11 weeks until BB6 finsihes.

It was the whole "Nasty Nick" incident that got me interested in Big Brother, before that I couldnt give an empty can of irn-bru for any reality tv show.

I presume the producers told them before the show started what kind of ratings they hoped they would get.

I don't understand this blanket refusal to accept this is a general Big Brother forum, all the series are and will be discussed not just the BB6 one although no doubt after tomorrow that will be the the uppermost one for a while

It sounded to me like Craig had just guessed at that figure to emphasise his point, I don't think he or any of them at that time had a clue just how popular it would become.

I always thought that it was Tom who really outed Nick, he was the catalyst that got Craig and Darren suspicious in the first place.

I also recall (& this is def true) that before Nickgate Craig was best known for being asleep in the house all the time.

Yes, everyone nicknamed Craig "The Sleeping Man."

I agree Dandy - It did seem to be Tom who first twigged what was going on, when he first mentioned it to Craig, Craig didn't seem to have a clue what he was on about until he spelled it out for him. This whole episode was what finally put me off Craig (well, it was before the conveniently leaked story from his family), I think he saw it as a way of being in the spotlight and used it, sadly (for me) I think this is what swayed a lot of viewers who soon forgot the sleeping man and saw him as assertive and fair.

So really the Nick confrontation helped him to win (not saying he wasn't a worthy winner, though I'd have preferred Anna to win)

I suppose then, that's what is needed, something significant to happen to a hm to get them thrust into the spotlight and therefore into viewers' minds, much like Cam going into the African BB house.

A hm can coast along in there but it only needs a few memorable incidents to get them noticed.

It's all about air time and hogging the camera, it'll be interesting to see how this year's lot play up to it.

You are right, it was Tom who outed Nicks little scheming. Tom was a pretty shrewd fella. But it was Craig who confronted Nick with the evidence.

Craig did sleep a lot, hence the name given him by the other housemates of the incredible sleeping man. Craig was also up for a laugh though, more so than some of the other housemates. Craig was quite fun at times I liked Craig I voted him to win and was glad when he did

Yes, I am always surprised that Tom's role in the outing of old Nasty is largely forgotten.

Ditto! It's all coming back to me now, though. Tom was made of strong stuff even though, 'Nick revealed a secret stash of cigarettes to ally Tom' he told Craig that Nick had been showing him notes with hm's names on it. If only Tom had shown a bit more gumption I think we'd have had a different winner but good on Craig for actually doing the deed.

I remember at the time how exciting (and more importantly REAL) it all was, which is why for me, no other BB will ever come close to BB1.

EDIT: Hadn't realised it was this close

Craig won Big Brother with 46% of the votes

Anna came second with 41% of the votes

Darren came third with 13% of the votes

Craig was perfectly happy for Nick to show him other housemates names.

It was only when he found out that Nick was also showing his name to some of the other housemates that he became aggrieved and decided to share the information with the less aware housemates.

thats what i think too....craig was angry at being double-crossed rather than nick cheating. otherwise he would have called a "housh meeting" as soon as nick showed craig names

Me too, that's exactly when I started watching it...

I really don't think Craig was playing the game as some seem to imply here by confronting Nick and thus ensuring he got maximum camera time. It was all a lot more innocent back then - hell, there was a shot of Nick in the DR asking if a certain incident could not be shown, and Craig said he couldn't believe they'd make a show out of him and the others just sitting round.

Seeing it all again last night made me very nostalgic. It all seemed a wee bit purer back then, not so gimmicky.

Not that I'm knocking gimmicky. I loved BB5

i cant believe its nearly 6 years ago!!
didnt it start off with just 5 or 10 minute nightly update shows?

There was only the highlights show in the beginning - I seem to remember it was about 45 mins a night, but I could be wrong. There was a proto BBLB with hamsters taking the place of the HMs in a sort of skit thing. The voting cost 10p a go and the internet streaming was free (though I didn't have a puter back then)

Happy days!

Oh yes! The streaming! I managed about 10 minutes of watching them playing volley ball or summat before my connection dropped (on dial up!)...
