Can I use old O2 contract SIM in O2 PAYG phone

Hi,

My first post to this forum (usually frequent the Satellite TV forum!), so I hope this isn't a dumb question. I had a look for similar topics, but there was nothing spsecifically the same.

Anyway, I have an ancient Nokia 3310 (broken screen etc) which is part of a multiple phone deal originally with BT (before they became O2) and now with O2. I can still make calls, and the package is good, but any attempt to upgrade the phone cheaply with O2 means I'd have to switch to one of their new packages which I don't want to do.

Sooo, I've got my eye on a Motorola v220 which you can get SIM-free for about £100, but I've seen the same phone cheaper (£70 on Amazon) on an O2 PAYG tarif. My question is if I get the O2 PAYG v220, can I just put my current O2 SIM into the v220 and expect it to work?

Thanks!

Yup, I realise the SIM free one will work, but will the O2 PAYG phone work with the older contract SIM too?
It's 30% cheaper!

I dont see no reason why not if the sim fits and its the same network. Mums sim from her old BTCelnet philips mobile dont fit my old 02 phone I got in the house from 3 years ago and will not fit the 02 phone I use the now.

My advice would be to call O2 again and explain that you have been with them for a number of years, that your current phone is broken and that you would like an upgrade at a competitive price.

But, you want to stay on the same tariff.

If they say you must change tariff, then say that you have seen a similar offer from Vodafone (or any other network) and you heard how good they are and were thinking of a change, but upto now Vodafone couldn't match your current tariff. Now you might as well try Vodafone.

Also ask O2 what you need from them in order to port your number to Vodafone.

You'll be surprised how quickly they offer you the phone you want for the price they offer it to all their contract customers (plus maybe a £25 upgrade fee.)

Your only commitment is that you will stay with them for another 12 months, but there should be no reason to change tariff.

Well it worked for me

EDIT: This approach will not work for you - sorry .
When I first read your post I assumed you meant it was an old BTCellnet contract, but reading it again now, I realise you meant it was an old BT Mobile contract.
BT Mobile will be reluctant to help as they no longer use O2 as their network for any new business.

How about getting a new O2 V220 mobile on contract as discussed in this thread. If you abide by the terms and the company doesn't go bust (it's been in business since 1998), it won't cost you anything for the phone and line rental over the 12 months. Keep the BT mobile contract running and put your existing SIM in the new phone.
If you do this, remember to also cancel the new contract at 12 months, having provided any required notice period
