Is there a mobile phone with GPS?
I looking at doing a spot of Geocaching and as it's time for a mobile upgrade wondered if there is a phone that has gps built in?
Any help would be appreciated

You can attach an adaptor to the Nokia 6600, and get software to use it as a GPS system.

Err no. Try again, and do your research again. Why would I say they do if they don't. Come back and prove they don't have (A)GPS, because I can prove they do.

I should know if they have GPS, I've had both of them. They offer lots f features for a low price, esp. the Moto A835. Bluetooth, Infrared, Email, A-GPS, MP3 player, 2 VGA Cameras, Video recorder, 3G support, Java, WAP GPRS, MMS.

Maplin do one,
http://www.maplin.co.uk , look for part number A71BA, or look on the Garmin website. EDIT: Another company that makes them is called Benefon , but I don't know who retails their gear in the UK. |

Unfortunately, yes. I think it's 25p. But you don't need to be in a 3G area to use it.

For the Nokia 60 series Symbian-based phones you can get a fully-featured mobile version of the TomTom Go GPS navigation system. It comes with a seperate, bluetooth GPS receiver and according to all reviews is rather excellent. I believe the set-up kit is somewhere in the region of £200 though so probably not what you're looking for.

When I trialled an A835 on 3, I could get the phone to show me a (chargeable) map of where I was standing, using GPS and mapping data from 3's website. But I never found a way of directly reading the GPS co-ordinates.
So yes, some of the 3 phones have GPS, but the functionality is very restricted. |

My Motorola A1000 on Three has AGPS and it's own inbuilt GPS receiver too.
The AGPS (Assited GPS) is charged by Three as you use their network, but you can turn this off on the menu and only use the GPS receiver which is FREE as you don't use any of Three's network services. There are several GPS software packages out for the A1000, some better than others and some that are free. I haven't really bothered using my A1000 for GPS as I have GPS in my car, but on the odd occasion I have used it on foot when lost in a new city it's worked well using the online services from Three. These are of course charged for, but you can pay a flate rate per month of either £5 or £10 depending on your tarrif to use it unlimited without extra charge. If you are using a symbian UIQ operating system on your phone (like the A1000) then take a look at nhgps. There's also wayfinder, but this appears to be stupidly priced. Just a shame that Tomtom don't do a UIQ version, although I wouldn't buy it now as I have a dedicated GPS system and it gets a much better signal and the software is spot on. |
