The Dome becoming 'The O2' (merged)

That's it really - opens 2007, the marketing hype make it sound quite good, bit of a stupid name though.

I hate the name. It makes it seem like it's exclusive to O2.
The O2 Centre in Finchley always annoyed me too.

According to today's Mirror (26/5/05) the Millennium Dome is to be bought by the O2 phone company and renamed the '02'.
Hang on. Wasn't this white elephant sold in 2003 to Sol Kerzner, the South African businessman behind the Sun City complex? So what happened to that deal, then?
Furthermore. according to the Observer (10/4/05) the building was sold to 'the secretive US tycoon Philip Anschutz'.
What I wish to ask is how many times has the Dome changed hands since being closed in late 2000?
Secondly, how long does the Great British Taxpayer have to keep paying for the bloody thing before soembody actually does something with it?
Is this all hype to make it look as if progress is being made or is there something more sinister going on? After all it has cost at least £1bn apporox already from taxpayers.
Your thoughts, please.....

I just wanted to say that I visited the Dome in 2000 and it was so boring in my opinion!

We ended up just walking round and round and it was hard to believe it cost practially a billion quid!!!

I think they should make it into a huge indoor theme oark with brilliant indoor white-knuckle rides, but also have a section with swimming pool/leisure complex etc and other things to suit all ages.

I thought The Dome was a part of the 2012 Olympic bid - for gymnastics, or something!!

It probably should but it wasn't designed for that purpose so the foundations would probably not be up to it.

The dome is part of the Olympic bid but cant understand how it can be if it is being developed privately as a:
a) business park
b) casino
c) entertainment complex
d) hotel
etc etc

Isn't it supposed to be a landmark? How embarassing...

I know that I'm a bit of a lone voice on this one, but I think that the Dome is a superb building and its a shame that its been wasted for so long.

It was the millenium exhibits that were dull - not the dome itself.

I think that it'll make a great concert etc. venue so this news has cheered me up!!

I would have liked to have seen the dome turned in to a project similar to the Eden Project but on a bigger scale and to include a variety of Environments not just tropical.

You're not alone. I went there a few times and really liked it. The building, although temporary, is excellent and would make a really good concert venue.

Have a nice day.

What do you mean? Something like different zones for different parts of the world, perhaps?

Sort of. I just thought it would have been interesting to have an area in London were people could see different environments similar to the Eden project or Biosphere 2 in Arizona. It would have also provided education as well as scientific interest.

That's a good idea. But why do you think it's taking SOOOO long to actually put it into some kind of use?
What's going on??????
