If I'd have said "everyone who has ever been to university thinks big brother is beneath them." that would be generalising. But I never said that.

Do you see?

Why are you getting so worked up over it? It's not really that big a deal is it?

So you'll admit you were wrong when you said I was generalising.

Saying someone is generalising is basically saying they're stupid.

I won't admit to anything in case it incriminates me

Don't take things so personally, I certainly wasn't saying you are stupid, I don't even know you.

I never said people who have gone to university don't fit here.

I said "There's a lot of snobbery among university types about Big Brother."

Read the quote it says "There's a lot of snobbery".

"There's a lot" doesn't mean "all".

Calm down dears it's only Big Brother!

No one I know enjoys BB as much as I do, my daugther and partner think it's weird and obsessional. They ain't too happy when I hog both the TV and the internet...

There *is* a stigma attached to saying you watch big brother. In my case though, it isn't so much that if you watch BB it means you've got no life or friends. It's that you're just a plain old idiot.

Same with saying you watch any kind of reality TV at all...

People don't think that Big Brother has any kind of intelligent or artistic merit. It's mind-numbing 24 hour drivel for the masses.

I'm a big fan. But sometimes Big Brother even makes *me* cringe. How about Davina's delight over the camera in the toilet?

Nah... Maybe a few BB fans will pop over and demonstrate a ready wit and a high IQ... But I don't expect anything violent. *angel polishing halo smilie*

Erm, Big Brother is a massive show!! 7 million viewers last night can't be wrong!! Do you really think Ch4 would go to all this trouble if only a handful of obsessives were watching!? - I don't think so. Everywhere I go I hear people talking about it!

I think that's been disproven, don't you?

Yes, but what has that got to do with you saying this "whoops.. another one who doesn't fit here then.."

Who said you didn't fit here?

It was meant in the context of being able to count university posters on one hand.... another one to count meant that you were going onto two hands which would muck up the theory!

I probably should have written "another one who shouldn't be here" rather than what I wrote. Apologies for the confusing reply!

I get round this problem by only discussing it on the Internet, and not talking about it in real life, unless the other person raises it first. I also try to make a bit of money too!

I've got a BA Hons degree and am well on my way towards a second degree from the Open University. My subject area(s) are psychology, sociology and cultural studies. I have a love-hate attitude towards Big Brother. It's 'tabloid tv' and driven by an attempt appeal to people's base instincts - voyeurism, judging and putting down other people - in order to get high ratings. I find aspects of it very superficial and bland. On the other hand I find it interesting to discuss some of the issues that it throws up. Drawing on what I remember from the Open University module I did on 'culture, media and identities', it seems there's an element of 'creative appropriation' going on here - i.e. the producers intend the show to be one thing, but the consumers - in this case the viewing public, change it's meaning by the way they interpret it. If there are people with degrees watching and taking part on this forum, perhaps we can subvert the trend towards 'dumming down' in television by generating some academic debate and analysis - there's a lot that could be said/discussed from the point of view of psychology and sociology. For example - how come Freud is never mentioned by any of the psychologists on Big Brother?
