I've got a BA Hons degree and am well on my way towards a second degree from the Open University. My subject area(s) are psychology, sociology and cultural studies. I have a love-hate attitude towards Big Brother. It's 'tabloid tv' and driven by an attempt appeal to people's base instincts - voyeurism, judging and putting down other people - in order to get high ratings. I find aspects of it very superficial and bland. On the other hand I find it interesting to discuss some of the issues that it throws up. Drawing on what I remember from the Open University module I did on 'culture, media and identities', it seems there's an element of 'creative appropriation' going on here - i.e. the producers intend the show to be one thing, but the consumers - in this case the viewing public, change it's meaning by the way they interpret it. If there are people with degrees watching and taking part on this forum, perhaps we can subvert the trend towards 'dumming down' in television by generating some academic debate and analysis - there's a lot that could be said/discussed from the point of view of psychology and sociology. For example - how come Freud is never mentioned by any of the psychologists on Big Brother?
