That scrolling odds thingy keeps my laptop fan perminently on the go

Well after getting sick of badly behaved Flash ads on here putting the processor on 100%, I thought I'd solved the problem by installing a version of Firefox without Flash installed, but now I find the scrolling betting odds scroller on the left of the screen is keeping the processor busy. I assume it's Javascript.

Ok, so it isn't maxing out the processor all the time, thankfully, but it's enough to keep the fan going all the time, which I find alittle worrying, as I'm not sure it's designed to keep running all the time like a desktop fan, not to mention it would be running down the battery if I didn't have it on the mains.

It also keeps the processor busy doing the same thing when the browser window isn't even on screen, any chance it can be modified to not do it's calculations when the browser window isn't displayed? Or better still, just have a stationary one? It's very processor intensive, at least on a 2ghz machine.

there's an extension called 'ad-block' you can download from the firefox homepage. It allows you to block any ads you want...

Yeah, get Adblock. I have all the adverts here blocked including the scrolling frames on the left.

If you get in touch with forum support (and enough others do too) there might be something done about it.

Had to do the same myself. Somethign was slowing my PC down to a crawl and it was that.

I've had the same problem on DS as well with their flash ads so they are blocked here as well

I wouldn't bother with the forum support either personally - I had a bad experience when speaking with them on the subject - they told me there was nothing wrong and nothing that could cause my problems etc. They did mention that they had been having problems with ad providers

I replied with the evidence I had collected about the problem I was having and the tests I had done etc - I was ignored

Ads remain blocked at the moment - The CPU load problem kept causing my tv capture card to drop frames etc - once or twice it even caused the capture card to retune to the channel and stop recording cos there was such data loss caused by the ads

Irritating

I'd actually forgotten that there were adverts on digitalspy until I used my work laptop to visit the site .

Actually the site is so much better with adblocking.

Anyone remeber last year and the annoying tunes that used to play in the backgound?

I find it very strange that a js scroller lags your processor.

You can dissable js in FF. It would kill it stone dead.

Made my powerbook crawl, especially when opening forum threads in tabs... firefox adblock and flashblock extensions fixed it..

flashblock just puts a play button where the flash content is so you can play it if u want (which isn't often)

adblock is great... gets rid of those annoying animated ads

I find it rather odd how it manages to use up so much processing power just to scroll a bit of text, although efficent coding seems to be going out the window these days. Laziness caused by fast, powerful machines it would appear.

Yeah, I know, but turning JS off and on is a pain though.

Thanks, flashblock sounds especially good.
