No, in nature a woman would not have as many periods as modern woman does, as she would be either breast feeding or pregnant. Each menstrual cycle increases the chance of fibroid buildup and endometriosis. These days many women do only take a gap each 3 months.
The main two reasons given by doctors for the bleed gap is to see if you are pregnant (you used to be meant to report if you didn't bleed for two monthly gaps running!) and because they felt that women would be reassured everything was normal if they continued to have a monthly bleed. In fact the inter-pill bleed is not a normal period at all, but a withdrawal bleed.
