Calling When Abroad
Helix
30-05-2005
Hi

I am currently on orange and I will soon be travelling to spain with my parents. I was wondering is it possible to call my parents who are on virgin when abroad. I know that it is possible to call the uk from abroad but I was wondering if it is possible to call other roaming handsets abroad.

I know this is possible on vodafone as it says so on there site but orange's site seems to suggest you can only call the UK. Has anyone tried to do this before and find it works.

If it is that I have to change over to vodafone does anyone know a cheaper way to unlock a motorola v500 as orange want £20.

Thanks
Craig

I have a Moto v500 aswell. I was quoted £20 by Orange and most shops too. What phone do your parents have? If it's a Nokia I'll unlock it for free. The best (and cheapest) thing you can do is get both phones unlocked and buy two Amena SIM cards from a Telefonica shop in Spain.

Thanks for offering but my parents phones are already unlocked as virgin did it for free. When i questioned orange about why they charge and virgin don't they just said that becuase virgins a newer company but i don't know what thats got to do with it.

I think what i'm going to do is pay the £20 and get my phone unlocked and then buy a vodaphone sim card incase i can't find the spanish sim cards when i get there.

There are a lot of Telefonica stores in Spain, it's their BT. There's three mobile networks, ES Vodafone, Amena and Telefonica Movíles (MovíStar). Amena is the cheapest.

You'll find Spanish SIMs on ebay aswell.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...sPageName=WD2V - Amena PrePay, With €18 of credit free.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...401177965&rd=1 - MoviStar PrePay, With €6 of credit free.

I don't know how much they charge in shops but I've just found this site which sells Spanish SIMs. http://www.spainsim.com/home.htm Amena SIMs cost £20.

Thanks for the site. I think I will just wait until i'm out there and hope i can get one cheaper. I would buy off ebay spain for €7 but I don't know much spanish so i don't know how i would contact the buyer.

Thanks for all your help

A mobile phone, whose network base is in the UK, can be contacted where ever it is roaming at the time by dialling the normal number with the relevant international prefix, you'd save a lot of time by storing all your numbers in your contacts with +44 instead of the 0 at the beginning of each number when you are abroad. Otherwise you need to know the international exit codes and whilst this is almost invariably 00, some places vary.

Thanks, its good to know that it is possible to use orange like that. I think i am still going to get my phone unlocked so i can use a spanish sim card when i get out there as it will be much cheaper. Plus I have been wanting to leave orange for ages now.
