I am being plagued by "end of contract" calls trying to sell me a new contract.

At least 1 or 2 phone calls a day.

All the companies seem to be Welsh who say there are "6 companies in the area" who do this.

Three companies I have details for are:

Landmark Communications
Llanelli
Tel: 07970 219522

Communications Direct
Dominions House
Cardiff,
CF10 2AR
Tel: 02920368700
h**p://www.communicationsdirect.org.uk

Shelco Telecom
3A Pontardulais Rd
Gorseinon
WEST GLAMORGAN
SA4 4FE
Tel: 0870 2424794
h**p://www.shelcotele.com

When asked "where did you get my number from" they either:

1. say "We got your number from o2"

2. say "We got your number from o2's national database of end of contract numbers"

3. say "the first numbers of your telephone number 07843 tells us your on o2 and the last numbers we generate".

4. Hang up

I have asked o2 and they say "they do not give out personal details" and there is no database.

My Question is if they generate my number:

a) how do they know i'm on o2 and at the end of my contract ?

b) is it legal for them to store my number and call me ?

A quick internet search shows people are having the same problem:

http://www.3gnewsroom.com/phorum-3.4...&i=9308&t=9308

Please name and shame these companies here and hopefully the right agencies will stop them.

Answers:

a) Like they say, your number begins 07843, so chances are it is a 02 phone, unless you have ported the number from O2 to another network. Wrt the contract, chances are you are within 12 months of the end of your contract - that's close enough for them.

b) Yes, until you register the number with the telephone preference service and wait 28 days.

Alternatively, you can request an individual company to refrain from making you unsolicited marketing calls - that one must then refrain.

i am going through the exact same problem. I too am with o2, and when I joined up, I explictely asked for my details not to be passed to anyone. Apparently that was done, but now I am entering the last month of my contract and I am getting loads of calls.

I got 2 different answers from o2. The first answer was; "We will never give out your mobile number to anyone"

The 2nd reponse "We enter all our customers into a database but have no control over where they go once we have put them in our database" <- obviosuly contradicts point 1.

Also if it was agreed that my details will never be passed to other companies (that would contradict point 2 above), they have obviously lied to me. I am going to contact trading standards to see if anything can be done, as I am sure that if you request not to have any of your details passed onto any 3rd parties then this cannot be done, if it is then it breaks DPA.

Have you filled in this complaint form?

http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/cgi-bin/tps_complaints.pl

Alternatively, write to the following people to complain that the companies calling you are commiting an offence against the Privacy and Electronic (EC Directive) Regulations 2003

I'm on o2 online and have never had this problem. When I was previously on an Orange contract which I got from the Carphone Warehouse I did get these calls, so it could be the company you buy your phone from that give out your number

Hello

This is really interesting this has just started to happen to me this week, I am also receiving these calls from other mobile operators as I am approaching the end of my contract with o2, 3 months to go.

I was really angry about this, so I checked my contract and the two use of details boxes on the contract had no printed in them.

So I rang o2, well they answered the phone straight away but they were completely unhelpful and said I had to prove to them that I had said no to the use of details conditions by faxing a copy of my contract to them. Which I personally think is a disgusting way to treat your customers but be assured they will pay for this when the contract ends.

Also the companies which are calling, some of them claimed my contract was due to end this month, well that’s a lie, that companies name was mobile heaven.

It’s a pity we could not email a link to this thread to offcom and o2. I will be going to the o2 shop tomorrow and hells coming with me.

I'm getting these things regularly now and it's giving me a headache. I've spoken to 3 a couple of times about it and they explicitly state that it was my dealer who passed on my details.

I've had Welsh callers twice now, one from Whiteheart communications the other wouldnt say.

Also why doesnt Whiteheart have a website??? There is no info I can find about them.

My dealer was Mobiles.co.uk who I was deeply unhappy with anyway as I felt that they were a deceptive and cheap outfit once I had the phone and didn't want to know me afterwards when I had complaints.

I guess most dealers are the same but I suggest avoiding mobiles.co.uk.

I want to shout it...

AVOID MOBILES.CO.UK

That feels better.

Really don't mean to dig up an old thread, but this is starting to get out of control :-\. I have had serveral phone calls from landmark, everytime I tell them I just renewed my contract with O2. However, they still keep ringing?!

They claim they represent O2. Just got off the phone with O2 Customer Care and they say, they are currently investigating them. What I want to know is, how they knew my contract was coming to an end. O2 swore blind that they did not give them this information. Anyone have any ideas or continually getting calls :-/?

i work at o2 customer care and am myself also an o2 customer and i still get these calls as i am in the last few months of my contract. its become more apparent over the last month that these companies have been ringing customers cos they have then rang o2 straight after with the same question that all of you have, that is 'where do they get my number from?'. the answer to that question is unfortunately unknown, i've asked my superiors at work who say they dont know where they get the numbers from and hence nothing can be done if they dont know.
i understand its annoying and i dont like it much either but at the end of the day just ignore them and eventually they will go away.
