I was watching The Wright Stuff this morning and interesting point was raised, that there will be only one black artist (debateable as this is) for the concert and that is Mariah Carey.

I think that for a concert hoping to raise awareness of the issue poverty in Africa, there should be a more multicultural aspect to it, to include as many groups as possible.

It's not as if there aren't any popular black artists around, from America you've got Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Usher, Whitney Houston the list goes on. Even in Britain there is Lemar, Jamalia, Dizzee Rascal and so on.

Also there are many African bands, that whilst not well known over here, could be approached as it is an issue which I imagine would be close to their heart, and therefore the issue might bring some relevance to the concert.

I know the list isn't finalised, so this post might be premature, but even at the last concert, the only black act there was Sade. So I hope a little thought is put into creating a wide selection of artists.

Radio Tarifa would be a great band to have perform. Their music is a blend between modernised traditional spanish music/Moorish & far east influences.

They are also amazing live.

Orchestra Baobab from Senegal would be good too.

Of course there should be. It was the same at Live Aid.

Geldof is probably a racist.

Sorry to be pedantic but wasn't Tracey Chapman there?

Let's not go there. I don't think he's racist, it just hasn't (as yet) been as well thought out as it could have.

If I remember correctly Tracy Chapman performed at the Nelson Mandela concert in 1988.

Oh yes of course - that was it

Come to think about it - she was probably an unknown then.

I agree, I think there should be a better mix of acts but, one could argue that they are trying to appeal to the majority hence the current mix.

I think lady-smith black mambazo would be great to watch and they are slightly popular.

I didn't notice how many black people were listed to perform.

The ones who are racist are the ones who are saying there should be more blacks. Why does the colour of their skin matter?

That really is ridiculous. To call someone racist for suggesting that there should be a more ethnic balance to the concert. It would be nice that a concert that was trying to help people from a certain continent actually had people from that continent performing.

Looking for stories where there are none? Sounds like that mong Wright, alright.

Y'know, I think we need more black players in the England football team. Or shall we just let the folks in charge pick ywho they think is right, and not look for pointless, non-existant controversy?

I think there should be more white acts nominated for MOBOs.

Talking of black acts at Live Aid, what about that bloke in the Thompson Twins?

Of course it's racist. Basing a decision, on who performs, on the colour of a person is racist, which 'suggesting that there should be a more ethnic balance to the concert' is. It should not be about balancing the blacks and whites and other colours; it should be based on the acts themselves regardless of their colour.

Now that is ridiculous. Black people can be from any part of the world.

It's funny how the people who say there should be more Black artists at Live 8 aren't the ones who say there should be any White artists appearing at the MOBO awards. I don't give a toss who appears at Live 8 but it appears Geldof is trying to appeal to a popular audience. I'm sure somebody could put an a slighlty alternative version if they so wish.

It's hard to find many white artists that perform Music of Black origin though.

Before anyone elses criticises Geldof for not getting more black acts, consider this. Geldof doesn't just say 'I'm gonna have him, him, her, them and her' and simply expect them to turn up on the day you know. It's a balance between who he would like to appear and who agrees to appear. How do we know that the likes of Beyonce, Lemar, Jamelia and Usher etc haven't been approached and turned it down for some reason? I'm sure Geldof would be pleased to know that whilst he's doing as much he can to raise awareness of poverty, there's still some people ready to slag him off for it.

I wondered where Destiny's Child, Mary J Blige, alicia Keys, Usher and the Black Eyed Peas were.

I still think Geldof is using this to see his favourite artists for free but We will see.

I was actually talking about musicians from Africa. It's like holding a birthday party without the guest of honour.

Can't speak for all but I doubt I would watch a programme containing African Music. I agree with the earlier posting that Geldof is getting to see his favourite bands for free.
