Masks....and What They Reveal...
Mesostim
02-06-2005
Recent discussion have made me think a little... We know that the HMs..to a greater and lesser extent wear masks to hide their real selves and to present a character they want to be viewed as..

We talk on this forum about masks slipping...and from old housemates we know after a while they stop noticing the cameras and are more likely to reveal themselves. So what is it that they are trying to say before that moment....Nothing that is said in the first few days could be said without a certain self awareness of the camera...

Like a good short stroy nothing happens that isn't relevant. If a housemate reveals a secret in the first few days they do it in full awareness of the cameras and must actually desire that information to be out. It is later in the show when things are revealed we can be more trustworthy of them....Until then everything that happens must surely be intended....

One example that spring to mind must be Saskia on her desire to read the Sun...but I;d be interested if anyone could remember any snippets the others have intentionally let slide...and I am sure everything is intentional (lest they be very drunk) and what it really means when put the the Cynicism Translator....

I agree with your analyses that the hms are very camera aware and initially treat BB as another audition for the public

I wonder what it says about Sam who has done nothing but sit and giggle and laugh at every remark. In the context that hms become more trustworthy as the show goes on, I very much doubt it where Sam is concerned. Has this girl got anything else going on in her head other than...being the first 'visible' person to sh*ag someone on BB?

one of the reasons i welcome all the arguing in this year's house so early on, is that their immersion in their emotions (and its momentum) gives us a good glimpse behind the masks.

though undoubtedly for some inmates their mask is founded on initially stirring and manipulating confrontations.

Agree with all Mesostim wrote - though its certainly been true of every Bb since BB2.

You want another example of a HM sending a cynical message to the GBP? - well if Kemal's lips are moving... Definitely the HM who has put most thought into how he comes across - I'd not be entirely amazed if he turned out to really be a spot-welder from Barrow-in-Furness called Mike. A week in and I don't believe any viewer has the slightest idea who Kemal really is.
