Where did that million go?
DryHumper

Ok, things are allegedly looking bad for Steve, with a pulled single and a rapidly sliding chart position for his album. But is anyone else wondering where the million pound of his "million pound record contract" went? Have you seen any tv adverts? I haven't, and how much studio time (i.e. money) does making a bunch of covers make up? Not as much as orginial work, I would have thought. If I was Steve and his management, I'd be asking where the money went, or rather didn't go.

You're right.

I've noticed one thing about these talent shows.

The runner ups always do better than the winners.

No, know one benefits from these shows as much as they should. Only Will Young and Girls Aloud are exceptions.

I can't see how Girls Aloud have benefited much at all, they're worked to death, they hardly have any private time, they each get paid a pitiful allowance weekly, the small amount of money they've made from concerts and CD's (after their management and record company has taken most of it) has to be split five ways, the same will apply to all the rest of them, including G4 etc, Will Young is a big earner and a millionare, but he writes and co-writes his own songs and has sold a hell of a lot of CD's, he's also sold a hell of a lot of concert/arena tickets too in the last three years. Lemar is successful as well but on a smaller scale, but he'll earn more as he writes and co-writes as well.

They should really stop letting public phone votes decide winners. The final few should all be given the chance to release a single, with first airings on the show and then within two weeks, whoevers single sells the most should get a permanent contract.

Makes sense to me, the phone voting on any reality show usually ends up having nothing to do with the actual talents of the person, just "are they fit", or "oo the panel were mean to them this week" etc. This part should be scrubbed and each manager should end up with 1 person left of their own choosing. Then these last 3 could release a song each and let us choose.

Of course, that makes sense from a musical point of view but the reason I detest these shows is because they have diddly to do with music. It's all about ratings and the money they pull in from the phone lines. The TV execs couldn't give a damn if their newly created 'popstars' get dropped before their second album.

This is why we have a new series of The X-Factor, despite the abysmal state of Steve's career. It's also why we'll, sooner or later, have another Pop Idol; despite the fact that Michelle McManus' current career is dropping a couple of stone and then selling her story to the rags. Incidentally, surely her payments for these are a kick in the teeth for the thousands of people who eat healthily all their lives and don't need to go on diets?

Oh well. Weird ol' world.

surely the x-factor should be about someone having something extra or different about them? doesnt the winner being a middle aged man singing middle of the road cover versions just demonstrate that the judges and the public got it very, very wrong last year. I dont think anyone would argue that G4 were the more original act.

as for the money, obviously a lot of it has gone into schmoozing business execs, advertisers and the like into getting steve some exposure... however at the end of the day no ammount of cash was going to turn steve into a superstar; he's just too middle of the road and destinctly average as a performer

I had no desire to buy an Album by Steve or G8. I would have bought an album by Tabby or Rowetta though.

Just goes to show.

The way i see it is that the Tv company is there to make a TV show and you're right, yes they do think about ratings more than they do about the artists but after all they ARE the TV company and not the record label! I think Steve's record label should look after him more (even though i'm not surprised they don't because he hasn't got the X Factor!) - Just my opinion though!!

Thnx

Well, I think that million pounds was for a four or five album deal, so Steve probably got an advance of 250K for the first album. If he only sold 250K records (actually I don't know if that's accurate because last figures I saw were 95K) anyway, for arguments sake, if he sold 250K I doubt if the record company recouped the advance let alone went into profit.

This is a business and good business practice would indicate that he's not a viable project for a major label. IMO.

 Supposedly from the single, not the album.

From that £1,000,000 in his contract - that pays for everything. That million probably covered distribution, advertising and manufacturing of enough singles and albums to make the number one spot. Add on to that the necessity of having a video, maintaining a website etc, that million pounds could be frittered away very easily.

well who really cares i think he has only brought out one single and 1 album with that contract and frankly that is 1 single and 1 album too many. let him go back to pubs and clubs where he was much better suited we should have all listened to sharon from the beginning
