I have a Toshiba 220 DVD player (Multi-region from Leading Edge), I am having a problem playing The Matrix (Region 2) on it.

The problem I am having is the film will play, but every now and then it will jump to the start of the next chapter.I have changed the disk but this has the same problem at exactly the same places.

Has anyone else got a Toshiba 220, standard or otherwise, and can play a Region 2 version of The Matrix.

The particular section that the problem is very noticable is in chapter 10 (The one where Neo is climbing out of the pod) I see about 10 seconds of this chapter then it moves on to the next chapter. I have viewed the same disk on my PC and it plays the full chapter (where he sits up and looks around at all the other pods and is then flushed out and is rescued)

Many thanks

This sounds a classic case of the follow the white rabbit function not working properly on your player. This function allows you to branch out of the film at various points to watch behind the scenes footage.
I thought this was a problem with cheaper players from non mainstream manufacturers, had never heard it causing problems with Toshibas.
If this is the problem then probably nothing will solve it for your player although with some upgrading the firmware (the software controlling the player) did cure it.

Not sure if allowed to recommend other forums but try

especially the hardware forum you will get many more dvd users there.

This is a fault with the 1.2 firmware. You need to get the firmware update 1.3 that fixes this fault. Unfortunately you need to send it back to get the firmware updated. I had to phone Tosh direct and they took it away. I just got it back after a 2 week wait and it works fine now.

Thanks, yes I likewise have a version 1.2 firmware.

I have contacted Toshiba who are aware of the problem with the Matrix and will swap out affected players.

They have arranged to send a new player and take the old one away next week at the same time, so I don't even have to do without it.

That's good service but will your new player be multi-region?

No, but I work < 10 miles from Leading Edge's (where I got the player from) workshop and they will reapply the multi-region for me while I wait.

HOLD ON, although I've heard of this problem from another forum and know that the problem lies within the firmware which has nothing to do with the multi-region modification.

Couldn't Toshiba refuse to upgrade (firmware) or swap players which have been modified argueing the the warrenty has been invalidated.

Obviously if the modification company honour the garantee it will then be down to them to ensure the firmware is upgraded???

They could, but I when I spoke to someone from their technical support a couple of weeks ago I went through the process of explaining the problem but I didn't mention the multi-region, so that it could not be immediately blamed.

They confirmed straight away that there was a a problem with this player and The Matrix so I then explained that my player had been modified for multi-region. I expected that this was the point where I would be told, yup there is a problem but you have to go through your suppling dealer as you have changed it from standard specification etc.

But, the person I spoke understood exactly why people modify their players and if it is just a firmware upgrade they weren't too bothered. Even if it had a chip swap to perform the multi-region they have in the past fixed players out of good will.

Can't get better customer service than that.

As Toshiba are prepared to swap it, and have arranged for it to happen for me this is the best way for me as it makes it easier than going through the dealer.

Have received the new player today, it is version 1.4 firmware.

This appears to fix all the problems I've noticed with The Matrix.

That's pretty sweet service! Can I just ask how you went about sorting this out? Did you just phone them up, explain over the phone and Bobs your uncle?! You see I have the Tosh 220 as well, I haven't had any problems yet (I don't have Matrix either), but if I get probs in the future then it's nice to know they'll sort it out like this! I'd also like to know how to check the firmware version...

Yes, they arranged everything a matter of minutes over the phone, replacement player was on my doorstep the following day and the old one taken away.

Very good customer service from Toshiba.
