It's a simple ploy by gamblers. She's pretty sure to go tonight, you stick a few hundred quid on her to win, and if by a miracle she is saved tonight, and ends up winning it, they get huge odds on it. A bit like putting a few quid on the outsiders in the Grand National, only to find out it's a Non Runner on the actual day, you take the chance because of the huge odds.
