There have been plenty of modern-day references in DW before - Ace and her "ghetto blaster" being just one.

That was a difficult episode to judge. Going back to expectations first...

The initial tempter lines about the Doctor dining with an enemy and a nuclear meltdown in Cardiff (I'm recalling this rather vaguely!) were indeed tempting.

Then we learned that the Slitheen were back, and my heart sank a little. I probably enjoyed AOL/WW3 more than some, but the costumes were too 70's, and interrupted my suspension of disbelief.

Next we got the trailer at the end of DD. The effects looked good, the action looked exciting, and I was rather hopeful again.

And so to this evening. It started looking like we were just going to be 'treated' to a series of unzipping, unskinning and killing, and to be honest I didn't see the point. Obviously Margaret would want to get rid of those who stood in her way, but we've had two episodes full of the reveals, and it could have been merely suggested.

The 'Toilet to Damascus' scene didn't work for me either, just seemed too sudden, and didn't make sense.

The group 'dynamic' between the 4 protaganists was too staged and unnatural.

Gosh, not looking to good so far!

The pursuit and capture of Margaret mostly worked. A bit of clumsy humour, but maybe that was there for the kids and I can live with it.

The dinner was a good scene with good points made, better than Rose and Mickey. I think RTD is determined to set up something big involving Mickey for the series finale, but I don't think the acting has quite been up to it.

The climax was satisfying. (Should I rephrase that?) The Tardis forcing Margaret's regression was unexpected and a nice twist, and I was expecting Mickey to leave with them, so when he brooded in the shadows instead I was again pleasantly surprised. I might have enjoyed a bit more devastation than a few smashed windows and cracked pavements, but that may be something for a couple of weeks time..?

So on first viewing it seems like an episode that started poor and ended good. But having mulled it over and also seen DWC and some of the comments on this site, my opinion has been revised.

I can accept the opening scenes, like some of the later ones, as being for the kids. I can also see the toilet conversion as being about family and loss - well we've seen plenty of that already in the series. And the whole idea of exploring more of the Doctor's character and motivations and flaws makes sense, again this is probably going to be important to the final episodes.

So I'll probably vote good, which is a shame after a series of fantastics, but I'll wait until I've watched again in case I can find even more to enjoy.

Some more observations. Captain Jack was subdued and very much a minor character, which was most unexpected given the manner of his introduction.

Bad Wolf was exposed beautifully, except (maybe) for the Doctor's sudden dismissal of it. Was that RTD trying to be funny? Or was the Doctor worried that someone may be unhappy at his noticing the link? Or did something tap into his mind and dismiss the idea on his behalf? We'll see.

And finally, the trailer for next week. I don't believe the Daleks will be revealed in the last couple of minutes as part of the cliffhanger. Remember Rose falling from the barrage balloon? Looked like a sure-fire cliffhanger, but actually happened quite early on. I don't think the Daleks will show up that early, but maybe after about half an hour? I also don't think there's any significance to the BB chair. It's just the most iconic and recognised version. I had a few doubts about the game show format, but I'm convinced now that it can work if done well, and I'm fairly sure it will. It seems certain that those shows will be over before PotW starts, so there shouldn't be too many distractions during the invasion. Aaah, and there's something that I meant to mention a week ago. Remember the tag line at the start of the series, and for the first DVD - The Invasion Begins. As the invasion seems imminent but it began with the Autons in 'Rose', it surely seems that something very serious has been happening behind the scenes, and I'm very impressed with the way certain FMs picked up on this several weeks ago. Soon we'll find out just how accurate they were, and I can't wait!

Exactly - that story was called The Chase.

There's one point that hasn't been picked up on.

Jack points out that the technology Margaret intends to use (the cosmic surfboard) is beyond that of her own people and asks where she got it from. She doesn't really answer.

Maybe this is a clue to Dalek involvement?

Strangely enough, I bought the BBC version with the reconstructed bits. A few months ago, I managed to acquire a version with all episodes intact.

FANTASTIC!

Definately - I think it was said numerous times in the AoL thread that clearly the Slithereen were the puppets, not the masters.

I was hoping that we were going to get a little bit of 'reveal' regarding the Slitheen's involvement tonight (and possibly the Gelth's too), and the entities behind their involvement - obviously the story has been structured in such a way that to do that would have given too much away before they're ready to do so.

I think there's more to this than just the Daleks.

You know the music playing in the background in the home page for the bad wolf page? What is it and what does it say?

I think it's a very distorted "Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" with some scared breathing and mechnical noises overlaid.
Edited due to "sounding stroppiness" - someone's annoyed me on BB forum

I've got that. I watched it again recently and kept thinking how much it would benefit from a bit of agressive editing. For a "chase" it had very little pace.

If so, why? What is the TARDIS trying to warn them about?

Maybe this is the key? The Tardis has been responsible for the clues for some reason.”

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but could this be something to do with the Master.. i mean, he ended up falling into the Eye of Harmony in the movie version.. could it be him, that's in the Tardis, and made it materialise in places/times slightly unexpected in this series.... i'll go back to the wine..

A bit of a disappointment all round for me. Whilst not actually bad, it felt like a pause between acts, and I felt like it never really got warmed up.

I liked the TARDIS revealing its soul, but it felt slightly clumsily done - if this had been touched upon more in the previous episodes, I probably would have been more convinced.

Forgive me if this has been done, but has anyone checked out the lyrics for "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf"? As recorded by Barbra Streisand on an album from 1963.......I think there are questions in there that maybe will lead to answers..........

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf
The big bad wolf
The big bad wolf
Who's afraid of the big bad wolf
Tra la la la la
Long ago there were three pigs
Little handsome pigs
For the big, but very big, very bad wolf,
They did not give three figs
Number one was very gay
And he built his house with hay
With a hey hey toot he blew on his flute
And he played around all day
Now number two was fond of jigs
And so he built his house with twigs
Hey, diddle diddle he played on his fiddle
And danced with lady pigs
Number three said: "nix on tricks,
I shall build my house with bricks!"
He had no chance to sing or dance,
'Cause work and play don't mix
Ha, ha, ha, the two little do-little pigs
Just winked and laughed Ah! Woo!
Who's afraid of the big bad wolf
The big bad wolf
The big bad wolf
Who's afraid of the big bad wolf
Tra la la la la
Came the day when fate did frown
And a wolf blew into town
With a gruff huff puff, he puffed just enough
And the hay house fell right down!
[Laughing]
One and two were scared to death
Of the big bad wolfy's breath
All the hair of your chinny chin I'll blow you in
And the twig house answered yes
No one left but number three
To save that piglet family
So when they knocked, he fast unlocked
And said come in with me
Now they all were safe inside
But the bricks hurt wolfy's pride
So, he slid down the chimney and oh by Jiminy
In a fire he was fried
Oh oh oh, the three little free little pigs
Just winked and laughed... Ah! Woo!
Who's afraid of the big bad wolf
The big bad wolf
The big bad wolf
Who is afraid of the big bad wolf
Tra la la la la
Tra la la Tra la la
Tra la la la la la la la la la la!
Who's afraid of the big, big, big, big, big
Bad woooooooooooooooooooolf!
