Parental Advisory: Explicit Content
dart

What's this all about? If they are gonna stick these stickers all over CDs they should at least be fair about it. For example there is a parental advisory sticker on Alicia Keys' latest single because she says shit once in the song, which is not really explicit, and the same song is featured on her album, but there is no such sticker on that. And on Papa Roach's single Last Resort they say f**k about 6 times in the song which is more explicit and more likely to offend, yet there is no parental advisory on there.

It's good that they warn parents who may not want their children to hear such language but they should be continuital with how they do it.

What i find odd, is that the people at the counter dont care about the stickers.

Ive seen kids as young as about 8 buying cd's with explicit content written on them, and the people at the counter don't question it. Ok, they are going to learn the language at some stage, but at that age is it really appropiete?

It seems to be the same with my local video rental store.

I saw a kid who I know is only 12 renting 51st State which is an 18 certificate. As long as they get their money, they're not bothered.

There's a shop near my school which lets 11 year olds buy fags and booze.

If it bothers you, tell the manager - the store can be fined, have their license withdrawn, and if I remember correctly from my days working in Woolworths, the assistant that sells/rents the video can be fined up to £3000.

Kinda gone off subject here, but the problem is shops don't train people to look out for under age people. They tell you the ages people have to be, but don't tell you what to look out for. Obviously an 11 year old is obviously not 16, but you often can't tell the difference between a 15 and 16 year old, or a 17 and 18 year old. I work in a newsagent and I usually don't even look at the person I serve, and a few days ago very nearly sold some fags to a kid about 12.

It's a very dodgy area - Hugon's not wrong about the fines and license-revoking - but indeed, it's very difficult to differentiate between those who can legally purchase certain goods, and those who can't.

AFAIK there aren't any standard ID cards for 16-year-olds to prove they can buy cigarettes or lottery tickets. Of course, plenty of them have fake ID to show that they're "18" years old!!

I was down my local the other night, and for the first time ever I was asked for ID - bearing in mind I've been in there two, three, sometimes four times a week since last summer - it turns out the bar is restricted to over 21's only!!

Now, I'm only 18, but the over-21's rule is also at the bar manager's disgression... I've known the bar manager for seven years, having spent my secondary school education with him!! Dead handy!!

Exactly. Then if you look at the cover of the album of which Last Resort is taken from, it has a Parental Advisory sticker on it, even though there's a less percentage of bad language in the album compared to the Last Resort single.

I am a parent with secondary age kids and I have let them buy some such cds. Swearing became less of an issue with me when I found that in primary school they were hearing such words before that I had protected them. I have talked to them and they do not swear (at least not in my hearing).

I do not like swearing anywhere but especially see no point in it being in music. There is nothing musical about it. They only have a few of these cds and only because 'clean' versions were not available. However, one of the cds isn't listened to at all because it is very bad and my son doesn't like it. The others just have an odd word in which you just to say hear which we can all live with.
