Sending a phone to a friend abroad?

A friend who lives in Canada wants me to purchase them a Samsung D500 mobile from a shop and send it to him over there.

Is there any problems which would not allow the phone to work or anything there?

I'll let experts comment on the fine technical points but the UK charger certainly wont work as the electrical system is different!

Also they may be charged tax by Canadian Customs on arrival!

Ah yeh thanks pinkonion, I never thought about the charger.

Can you not buy things cheaper over in Canada anyway?

And don't the Canadians use a different frequency band to the UK as well? The US certainly does and I think the Canadians use the same band?

If so a basic UK only spec phone won't get any signal over there! You would need at least a tri-band phone, probably even quad-band to cover all the options. Might not be so easy to find.

I've just looked on samsung.co.uk and it says the following:

Platform
- Tri Band (GSM 900 + 1800 + 1900 MHz)

Canada uses 850 & 1900MHz, so the rest of the world version sold in the UK could be limited in use in Canada.

Microcell Telecommunications Inc (Fido) uses 1900MHz
Rogers Wireless Inc uses a mix of 850Mhz and 1900MHz

Tri-Band phones sold in USA/Canada will usually be the two bands used in North America 850MHz & 1900Mhz and then one of the bands used in the rest of the world.
