Does anyone own a Sony J70 handset?

Has anyone got a Sony J70 handset? I am thinking of buying one and would be interested to hear from a users point of view on how good or bad it is as the reviews I've read are a mixed bag and most places just tell you a products good points only so they get the sale.

Thanks in advance.

I have one, unfortunately my wife washed it about a month ago and now it is dead

How good is it? Well, I am going to replace it with another J70, so it can't be that bad.

Seriously, it is a very good phone. Flashy and functional at the same time. The ability to sample your own 10 second ring tones (up to 3) is very cool ... in fact you can replace just about every sound the phone makes with samples .. it is an excellent way to express your individuality.

Reception is very good. Sound quality is good. Speakerphone is handy. Menus are slick.

Lots of good features. Only downside I can think of is its lack of resistance to 40 degree colour washes

Thanks for the info, I think I'll get one now especially since you were so happy to buy a second one, I'd think about getting another wife as well if mine done that (only kidding I'm sure she's lovely)

Thanks again.

The comments about tones are personal preference, but the battery life of my J70 was about 2x better than any nokia I have or currently own.

The main reason I have moved away from Nokia is the shoddy battery performance.

Hi again, I got my J70 and I'm quite impressed the ring tones sound a bit Gameboy and the vibrate is too weak to get my attention but apart from that I am well happy with it.

One thing though how do I get the E-mail function working in the extras menu? It says you can use your existing service provider but it dosen't seem to work I was wondering if I had to sign up with a special WAP provider or maybe I am just doing something wrong.

Can anyone help!

Make sure you have set up all 3 of the settings pages.
You are basically configuring a dial-up account (so use your isp's dial up settings), and an email login (so provide you isp's email server & login details).
Also, make sure you set up the DNS server ip addys, otherwise the phone won't be able to resolve the mail server addresses.

Any more problems, reply with the error you are getting.

Various info on that phone and the J5 can be found at http://www.cmd-j5.co.uk

My J7 died

Phone is cool but ring tones are very quiet compared with other brands.

Also when you get the email to work. When the connection fails you have to type the whole message you were sending again!

Still no joy I'm afraid here are my problem settings:

Provider:
Dial up no.: do I use T-mobile +447953968999 or my NTL 0800 number?
User name: My NTL username
Password: My NTL password
pop3 Server: do I use pop.ntlworld.com or 194.168.4.100?
smtp Server: do I use smtp.ntlworld.com or 194.168.8.100?
Data call type: isdn or analogue?

E-mail:
User name: My NTL username
Password: My NTL password
E-mail address: My NTL E-mail address

Details:
pop3 port: 110
smtp port: 25
Timeout: 120
DNS server: I am not sure what this is I assumed it was the four numbers seperated by dots?

I've tried all types of ways but all I get is a message saying it could not connect to the server and it has the cheek to charge me for not connecting!

I also tried to go to sonyericsson.com for some answers they weren't very clear and it was suggested I went Via wap so I went to wap.sonyericssonmobile.com on the phone but I got a message saying login error device name not supported, I haven't a clue what they mean by that, does that mean they don't support my phone? other wap sites work fine?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me it's much appreciated.

Cheers Automan, I did come across this site whilst hunting some answers and I downloaded the isp and e-mail settings docs but they weren't very helpful and they didn't cover my isp or network, I did find the site more informative than "the official" Sony Ericsson site though.

dns for ntlworld = 194.168.4.100 / 194.168.8.100
pop = pop.ntlworld.com
smtp = smtp.ntlworld.com

All your settings should be NTLWorld settings (email and dial-up)

You might have to check if you need a different phone number to dial in from a mobile, I think the normal numbers are dependant on you being on an NTL line.

If anyone's on O2 Genie (with the free WAP), shove 915000 or whatever the WAP dialup number is into the email settings, and Genie's DNS setting (can't remember the settings off-hand).

This way, you can check your email for free, since you're accessing it via Genie WAP!

Hi exC&Wengineer

Ok so these are the menus and their settings

Provider:

Dial up no.: An NTL number
User name: My NTL username
Password: My NTL password
pop3 Server: pop.ntlworld.com
smtp Server: smtp.ntlworld.com
Data call type: isdn or analogue?

E-mail:

User name: My NTL username (as above)
Password: My NTL password (as above)
E-mail address: My NTL E-mail address

Details:

pop3 port: 110
(is this right as the manual says or should I use pop.ntlworld.com?)

smtp port: 25
(is this right as the manual says or should I use smtp.ntlworld.com?)

Timeout: 120
DNS server: this menu gives me 2 to enter so I used 194.168.4.100 for the first one and 194.168.8.100 for the second but I can only set 1 as the home

Sorry if this is getting a bit long winded, its begining to piss me off too but I do appreciate your time in helping me in this problem.

Thanks again!

I am not impressed with the J70. It keeps locking out and turning itself off.

Sorry to hear that mine seems fine maybe it has an older firmware version. You can correct this by flashing the phone for more info visit this site http://cmd-j5.co.uk

I still have no luck with E-Mail it must be the dial up number, I will contact NTL to see if they have an alternate number if not I will have to try someone like Lycos. As long as I can send mail without having to do it via a wap or limited text I don't care.

Thanks exC&Wengineer for all the help you gave me, I'll keep you posted on how I get on.
