No chance! It doesn't cause any harm and earns Digital Spy lots of money no doubt.

How would it earn DS lots of money?

The more posts / threads / forum members - the more they can charge for advertising.

I very much doubt that any advertising revenue is based on the quantity of threads created.

If it were, I would suggest this Forum Rule would soon disappear:
Quote:
“6. Please scan the list of most recent threads (two pages or so) before posting a new thread, to ensure that a thread doesn't already exist on that subject.”

Quite possibly the numbers of posts and/or FMs are relevant, but are you sure that the number of threads influences DS's advertising revenue?

same here...........

I agree with sigurd, above............if anything multiple threads probably keep people away from the forum

Don't know how the problem could be solved. Limiting people to one thread a day would be fine by me, if it's technically possible.

that wouldn't stop people posting the same thread as someone else

only way to solve the multiple thread thing would be to have someone moderating full time unfortunately

Yes it would. people would have to think more carefully before they post their one and only thread for the day.

if people are not thinking to look a few posts down to see if the same thread has already been posted then what makes u reckon they're going to think about posting their one and only thread?

plus it's not fair on those who look before posting and may have 2 good topics to post in a day which may be of interest and good for the forum?

Bless you..what a lovely thing to say. You too.

Well, I now have a bit of repetitve strain injury in the old wrist, from typing the length of my pulitzer prize winning thread, that has had 3 replies (one of them mine) and it's nearly on page three so that'll teach me for trying to write a 'semi-nearly-but-not-quite-clever-post'!!

How about we limit it to one new thread a week?

People just don't recognize genius..that's what it is, what it is.

Just jesting everyone...promise!

It only applies to new members who get little excited once they recieve their posting privileges..

No

Although I dont recall ever starting a thread I would oppose this. I'm against even the mildest form of censorship

Just have a look at it now.

It is littered with silly one liners that could be posted on the WHATM thread.

Also noted is that "mostly" the thread starter has less than 10 posts to their name.

It's getting beyond a joke!

We've been invaded by egotistical school children from the Ch4 BB site.

You probably remember that new posters had to wait a week before they could start threads.........the given reason for stopping this was that it encouraged new posters to hi-jack existing threads and take them off-topic.

As a newbie (when do I stop being one btw! ) I do see two sides as I said, but maybe (and I have no experience of this forum on other years: as I have said a few times, I only got the net a while ago but have watched BB from week two of series one...don't know why I feel I should keep saying that!! Kind of so it looks like I know what I am talking about I guess, even though I don't), *breath* maybe it seems worse today and will this week, as instead of two people being up and therefore only 'so and so to go', 'I hate so and so' threads on two members..we have them on 12..so it seems worse.

Just my opinion..like I say..I don't have anything to refer it to.

I don't see how that's fair, I joined in May, after a year of lurking, and I have no difficulty skimming the page to see if there is a thread identical to one I'm thinking of starting, as a newbie, I don't think it's fair that we all be tarred with the same brush, or considered inferior, the hundreds of identical threads annoy me as much as any oldie.

I'm sure it will calm down soon. *clasps hands & says a little prayer* It's all down to f/m checking if there is a thread, relating to the subject they are about to post.
I agree it is annoying, when you have loads of threads, about the same thing over & over.

I don't agree with limiting people to one thread a day, not least of all because the show is on round the clock so there's a good chance you may legitimately need to raise more than one thread. However, I do think that some posting sanctions should be put in place for those people who repeatedly create new threads just because they haven't bothered to look at eg the last 4-6 pages to see if the issue is already under discussion.

I'm a moderator on a forum where we keep an eye on unnecessary threads - 1st time it happens the thread gets merged & the person who created the unnecessary thread is told of the merging and why it's been done, the 2nd time the poster is told that the thread has had to be merged & is warned that if it happens again their posting status will go through a moderator stage so that their posts will be checked (& therefore delayed) before appearing in the forum. Few people have managed to do it twice & we've never got to the 3rd time, but if it ever happens then the account will be suspended for however long we think fit. The moderators have a separate forum where they can post the username of whoever's posted an unnecessary thread to ensure that the other moderators don't contact the person for the same thing.

It's very easy to say the threads can be merged, but on a busy forum like this one, it's a lot of work. DS should increase if the number of moderators if necessary, but the members should also take some responsibility for the forum's smooth running.

I take your point but it does seem to be the newbies who are the worst offenders. They are only on here for Big Brother, many with little forum discipline and I guess they rarely bother with the other forums.

They can still take part but just not start threads.
