I very much doubt anyone on DW is getting complacent, given they have to sell the public a new Doctor (and probably new companion). This series had the strongest competition possible in Ant & Dec - and it beat them every single week. And ITV never thought Celebrity Wrestling would bomb as badly as it has - how much money did they spend promoting it? So there was no plan to "give up half-way through".
There is BAGS of choice anyway - if you don't like the majority of viewers choosing DW,
TOUGH! The big point about DW's success is that there is a huge appetite for well-told fantasy/sci-fi/action adventure - something ITV has spurned for years. And now it's bitten them on the bum and they don't like it ... maybe they should show a bit more imagination in their drama commissioning and stop peddling endless variations of dull detectives and grumpy surgeons.
