Switching from one2one to Virgin mobile
Cantona
05-05-2002
I'm thinking of changing my pay as you go phone from one2one (t-mobile) to Virgin mobile.

The lady in a mobile phone shop I went into today said it would cost me £10 to get a Virgin sim pack, and this would include £5 worth of calls.

She said she was '90& sure that I wouldn't need to do anything to the phone as one2one and virgin both operate on the same frequency' - Can anyone verify or deny this as being true?

Also, I have £4.80 left on my phone based on one2one, will I lose that if I go to Virgin mobile, or will it be added to the £5 credit I will get?

Thanks for any replies

You should be able to change from one2one (T-mobile) to Virgin with just replacing the sim card in your phone.

But Three things you have to consider

1. You will not get to keep the same number
2. You will lose any remaining credit on your one2one account
3. Why Virgin (why not orange better coverage).

P.S. Orange Good but i'm vodafone now because orange a bit naff in the hills of scotland (must be all the sheep blocking the signal)

1. You will not get to keep the same number Only my girlfriend knows my number, so she is the only one I need to tell
2. You will lose any remaining credit on your one2one account I've only got a bit left anyway, so it doesn't matter
3. Why Virgin (why not orange better coverage). Virgin calls work out cheaper for a light user like myself, and if I got to orange I more than likely need to pay to get my phone unlocked

Vigin/One2One Phones (using handsets / Sim Cards)
- technically the phone frequency is the same, as servuce is based on the one2one network. BUT dependant upon when you purchased the phone, and the lock placed upon it - you may be restricted from putting a Vigin sim in the phone until it is unlocked (check by finding someone with a Virgin Sim - and try it in your phone) .... otherwise you will need it unlocked for a nominal charge (eg. £35, if one2one will not do it)

You CAN retain your current number and 'Port' it to Virgin.

- First contact one2one customer services and check they are happy to provide you with a PAC/PUC? code (OFTEL deam this should be released by your current opertor when they have recovered any subsidy of the handset, or you have run the period of your contract on a monthly pay plan).

- Next purchase the Virgin Sim pack, DO NOT register it, but contact Virgin customer services, give them the number one2one gave you, after a short while your old number will be on the Virgin network!!

(The whole process should take around 5-7 working days)

Credit on one2one
- This will be lost !!

Coverage
- If you are happy with one2one coverage, Virgin should suit your fine, otherwise (as Angus mentiones) look for a network that provides good siginal strength where you visit most often !!

Call the Virgin Team direct on 0845 6000 600, and buy a 'Virgin Sim Pack' and you'll get an extra £10 of talk-time, so you'll get the standard £5 + £15 = £15 of credit, all for the £10 sim-pack.

I just got my PAC code from T-Mobile. Going out to buy a Virgin service pack right now.

T-Mobile is/was a good network, been with them for over 3 years. I hope they realise their new price plans are a mistake soon, because customers, like me, will be voting with their feet.

I'd like to go with Orange, they're my second choice, but they make you pay for Voicemail

Thanks for your replies.

I have checked my IEMI(?) number on the virgin website and they say that my phone will be ok for them.

Does this mean that I don't need to unlock it?

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone that has a virgin mobile, so I can't try their simcard

I have a Nokia 3210, It originally had a one2one sim card and I changed it to a virgin sim card with no problems whatsoever, No unlocking of the mobile or anything, it should just be a straight swap.

unlock and go to genie, I used to buy about £30 of top-up each month on virgin. I am now on genie, or should I say O2 and I buy only about £20 top-up each month, I send over 200 texts each month and 10p per text on virgin came up to a lot.

I can conferm that I purchased a One to One Motorola V50 `Pay as you go` phone and this works fine with my Virgin Sim Card, the only disadvantage is that the phone display is fixed to `One to One`
The major advantage of Virgin is the Free line rental Monthly Statement Account (You only pay for the phone call charges) and International roaming function
