If you are nearing the end of your contract with o2 you will most probably get a phone call on your mobile from a company called Communications Direct. The call will go along the lines of "According to our records your contract is due for renewal within a month or so, what we'd like to do is update your phone for free and give you a better deal on your monthly spend".

What they're actually doing is trying to get you to sign up with 3 but the wording will give you the impression they are with your current network o2. How they know you're coming to the end of the contract isn't something I'm clued up on.

Whilst there is nothing illegal about what they do, a lot of their success comes from people mistakenly believing they are calling from the upgrade department at o2. Some people are very happy with the deal they end up with from them (currently they're trying to push you on to 3's Talk and Text 900 - 750 minutes, 150 texts - for £20 per month for the first 6 months, all this with the Motorola V975) but personally I dislike the tactics of relying on people getting the wrong impression.

I know all this because I worked for them for the last week but left as I did not feel comfortable with these working practises. .

they know this info as o2 sell their data to other companies, like most companies these days do. i had this problem and have had to get a new mobile number, but i am sure it will all happen again in 10-11 months time.

it is illegal, especially if you have told your mobile phone provider you do not want your details passed on to any 3rd party companies, like i did, but it doesnt stop o2 from doing this, i have emailed the department that deals with the DPA 3 times now but they have not once got back to me

I would never go back to O2, they are bad for passing on your details even on PAYG.

Not if you state that you do NOT want to receive marketing calls from other companies, in my experience.

I have been with O2 on contract for almost 10 years now and I have never received such a call on my mobile. I did once receive a call from Call Connections (now O2) but when I requested that they only contact me by mail for all future marketing matters they duly obliged - in fact I only got a letter on Saturday from O2 reminding me that my 12 month contract is shortly to expire and offering that I should call them to discuss options for the next year - If I fail to contact them, I will automatically go onto a month by month contract tariff equivalent to what I am currently on.

How are you getting on with your complaint to the tps and the dpa, steven21?

Have you started your own legal proceedings against O2 yet for their alleged illegal activities?

Anyone suffering unwanted marketing calls from any organisation with whom you have no prior contact, register your phone number (landline, mobile, other non-geographic number, etc) with the telephone preference service

Commercial telephone numbers may be registered with the the corporate telephone preference service for similar effect

Fax numbers may be registered with the fax preference service for similar effect, although to send faxed marketing messages to an individual where there is no prior permission is an offence anyway. It's useful for corporate fax numbers though.

Check out all sites for full details before deciding whether to subscribe.

Yep, i got this. Thanks for the heads up maven. I was aware it was on behalf of three (started thread on the subject). mine was for a nokia 6630. Unfortunately i've heard bad things about three (unreliable service etc) so i'm probably not going to take up their offer.
