What is this? A transmitter?
Hi, I've seen these things pop up in a few places near where I live, and I am curious to what it is exactly, looks like something mobile phone-ish. Have a look at the pic, Its a bit crap as I took it with a phone.

It looks like a mobile phone cell ok.
look here to see if it's on the ofcom map of phone cells. http://www.sitefinder.radio.gov.uk/ (You need to zoom right in before the triangles appear). |

doesnt show up on those maps. It doesnt look the same as a regular mobile phone mast, looks more boring and gray. Next to it is one of those boxes, looks like a traffic light control box.

It might be a new one. It takes a while to get onto the ofcom map.
They're all gray an anonymous now. None of them want you to know what or where they are. Then again, it might be a new sort of tetra mast or anything, really. The shroud at the top stops you guessing the frequency from the size of the aerial, so it's difficult to tell. |

There's a couple of those near where I live and I've not been able to figure out what the chuff they are either.
The other odd one I've seen looks like a regular streetlight (the sort with the big vertical bit and a wee short horizontal bit at the top with a light on the end of it) but without the lamp bit. There's one just outside one of our local car dealers - I thought it was a streetlight when I first saw it, but it's set back about 12 feet from the rest of the streetlights and has a small equipment box beside it. No idea what that one is either. Edited to add: The streetlight shaped one is listed on the radio.gov website as a 12 metre Orange GSM mast. The other ones aren't listed on the map. |

Yes, it's definitely a mobile phone mast. There is one of the same design in Omagh which is used by Orange.

You will probably find a sign on the control box telling you who it is operated by.
