This entire thread and the subsequent banning of Phelings proves they were correct completely in what they originally said

Who is 'they'? One person using 'sock puppetry' to post under several different names doesn't mean one should reply to him in the plural. It's pretty sad when the only way a bloke can find people to agree with him is by pretending to be more than one person.

And it proves nothing. He was banned for being an ignorant hate-stirring bigot, not for being right. He was wrong on more levels than a multi-storey carpark and obviously had more issues than Time magazine. Plus was most likely struggling with his own sexuality.

Its probably not fair to say that, as the person is banned and can't reply.

What amuses me about the folks who've been p*ssed off about what they see as
Doctor Who being "gayed up" by RTD , and they're the same people - more or less
- as those who complained about the X-Men being "gayed up" by Bryan Singer, is
that Sci-Fi has always been and always will be used by writers/creators to
address political and social issues of the day. These people should do some
research into the genre they profess to love.

As for that kiss, I personally reckon there was sexuality in it (wasn't Captain
Jack holding the Doctors face in his hands at the time?) and was CJs way of
saying he'd like to do 'em both. Probably at the same time given half the
chance the slapper! Was a very funny moment IMO.

Can't wait to see what issues RTD deals with in the next series

I think Phelings made it clear that he had not even seen the episode in question,making you all pretty stupid as to not understand that it was censorship and political correctness rather than gays he was against

Perhaps it's best not to dwell on Phelings' comments again, really - they are covered by LeMarchand's post. Just wondered what everyone made of it? Just seems to have been ignored.

My response to LeMarchand's long, long, had-to-summon-up-energy-to-read-it post is:
I believe that an "overt sexual reference" is one stronger than carried in the average episode of Neighbours. I do not believe that television should be sanitised for children in the way that the poster implies, apparently with the backing of Mme LeMarchand. The appropriate response for this family to make is to not allow their children to watch TV, a measure that I remember some schoolfriends experiencing - they never minded that much, amazingly to me!
The name calling started when phelings referred to me, and any other gay person as a "poofter" and anyone else involved who may defend gay people from homophobes as "wooly woofter lovers". Phelings from thence became "the Bad Bigot". He created himself and scattered his words throughout space and time, a message (largely) to himself. The Doctor wouldn't kiss him, because he's a Thorn, not a Rose, and he died... or was banned.

Is that enough of a reply?

I was going to try not to post any more in this thread, as I feel that I have made my case, and that unless someone makes a point that I feel is particularly worth addressing further comment from me would seem unecessary. However, this has piqued my curiosity.

I've never heard this "gayed up X-Men" accusation before, and while there may have been gay characters (not that I can remember any), I certainly can't remember any RTD-stylee unsubtlety. Or is it that one of the leads was played by a gay man, which is surely no different to Brit Hugh Laurie playing an American doctor in "House"? Could you explain further?

While I'm here: salochin, I see your point about being an oppressed minority, but feel that there are better ways to make an opinion heard than to drown out any differing ones with accusations of hate. (Or, for that matter and back on topic, slipping references into family shows).

BTW, I would agree that in most nightclubs a gay male couple would be given short shrift. However, I have worked in places where, on the rare occasions that an openly gay couple have come in, people have looked - but left them to get on with it. Admittedly these places are in the minority, but they do exist!

There are a few clubs in brighton that are very mixed, and are the way most of us would like to see all clubs, gay or straight

If you hung around the aintitcoolnews forums you'd have seen it (I know I should know better than to give such places the time of day, but it's like a car crash, you just can't help having a look).

Admittedly Bryan Singer did nothing as unsubtle as RTD did with Doctor Who (let's be honest Fox would hardly let him would they) but he did profess that his initial interest in directing X-Men was what he saw as a correlation between the "outsider" status of the X-Men and his own experiences as a gay man.

These same people are now up in arms about him gaying up the american icon that is Superman.... Lol! Will they never learn!

Just as they where peed off when Michelle Rodriguez was in the 2nd to last episode of "Lost". I think the comment went something like "The last thing this show needs is that dyke b*tch".... And here was me thinking that my fellow geeks where somehow a bit more tolerant than most *sigh* you live and learn I guess.

Just to add my 2 pennith about your comments. I hear what you're saying and I too get a bit stressed at the overt sexualisation of TV in general these days. But I truly don't believe that Doctor Who is a perpetrator of this... A bit of sexual tension between Rose and the Doctor and some conversations here and there do not make this show unsuitable for family viewing.

Whereas Alfie Moon scouring the square in 'enders for a jonny so he could get his end away with Kat Slater is totally unsuitable.

BTW, are you lot gonna be watching Lost when it airs on 4 in August I've BTd them all myself (I know, very naughty) and I have to say that the TV highlights of this year have been that and Doctor Who.

I BTd them to, and saw up to eps 7 i think, themn my pc died, so hopefuly i can recover them, if not its redownload on my new pc or wait till on tv.

Possibly the oddest reference in Season#1, in so far as it has the appearance of being anti-gay, but what do others think? Absolutely necessary, or a reference too far?

I didn't think the reference was anti-gay - it made sense for the guy to be having an affair with someone to get all the food, so it could just as easily have been the butcher rather than his wife.

What I do think could be seen as anti-gay (or at least proves the point that many posters have tried to make on this thread) is the fact that it's been singled out. If it had been the butcher's wife, no-one would have noticed.

What do you mean by 'a reference too far'? Should there be quotas as to the amount of gay references on TV? If so, they will have to increase by about 1,000% to come close to the amount of heterosexual references on TV

I had a few exchanges with phelings in another sub-forum. He was never willing to accept my opinions or admit that, in most cases, he was wrong.

Lol no, but if you want to argue it makes sense to have a basic understanding of what you are arguing about, I myself rather choose not to talk about stuff I really don't understand (and make a pillock out of myself in the process)

lethargic_lad: I hope and pray that the people (if I can call them that!) over at AiCN are not indicative of fandom as a whole. Due to their inability to actually discuss a movie/show (or to keep spoilers to themselves), I rarely look at the Talkbacks. Had I seen the "X-Men" discussion, I would have been tempted to point out that the whole point of the X-Men was that they were a cypher for oppressed minorities. Wasn't aware that Michelle R. was gay - is she, or is it an assumption based on her looks/roles? Slight "Lost" S2 spoiler:

Vicky8: I don't think the wife messing around with the butcher would have been suitable either, but one of my points is that it is because homosexuality is a minority (and I don't mean that in a nasty way) practise/lifestyle it is so noticeable when RTD decides to slip in a reference.
