Well then it couldn't have been a DVD, as it's never been released in that format, either in the UK or abroad. It might have been a VHS tape still knocking about after many many years on the shelves, perhaps?

I have no urge to see Genesis on DVD in any hurry. Surely most fans have a dozen different versions of it already?! Give something else a chance to shine on DVD! Dragonfire!

The Genesis Of The Daleks VHS has not been commercially available for a while (though Amazon do have 2nd hand copies) - it ws released about 14 years ago along with the previous story, the 2 parter The Sontaran Experiment on a 2 video set and is long deleted, so I suspect it was, as ethel says the CD.

For the record the only Dalek stories that have been released on DVD are

Dalek Invasion Of Earth (Hartnell)
Ressurection Of The Daleks (Davison)
Rememberance Of The Daleks (McCoy)
and the Five Doctors (though this is a cameo appearance).

Revelation of The Daleks (C Baker) is due next month and The Daleks (1st story with Hartnell) is allegedly released in january next as part of The Beginnings box set.

That leaves

The Chase (Hartnell) though there may be copyright problems as it features a video of the Beatles playing Ticket To Ride)

Day Of The Daleks
a cameo appearance in Frontier in Space
Planet Of The Daleks
Death To The Daleks (All Pertwee)
Genesis Of The Daleks
Destiny Of The Daleks (both Tom Baker)

left in the BBC Archives to be released in the future.

Neither of the Troughton stories (Power and Evil) and the Hartnell 12 part story, The Daleks Masterplan, exist in their complete form. The surving episode of Evil Of The Daleks and the surviving three episodes of Masterplan were released last year on the Lost In Time DVD box set.

That's such a great shame. Power and Evil were possibly the best Dalek stories of all.

BTW thanks for that resume Urban, very informative. I'm eagerly awaiting many of those DVD releases.

...you forgot to add "if and when the BBC can get any agreement out of the tightwads who run Terry nations estate to agree to thieir release".

I suspect the forthcoming Dalek release was tied up in the contract negotiations over Daleks appearing in the recent series - timing of its sudden appearance on the release schedule seemed to coincide with the agreement reached...or am I just being conspiratorial?

Well if that is the case, we may well see a large chunk of Dalek episode releases over the next year or so. If they have negogiated this as part of their new Series deal (And surely they must have some rights to sell Dalek DVDs - Not only Revelation, but the new seried DVDs with the Daleks on), they may well try to push out as many of these releases before they need to renegotiate.
Although it seems more likely they're having to negotiate these on an individual release basis.

the contract problem only (and still does) affected TV repeats, DVD and Video rights are sorted and always have been.

I have the LP version of Genesis of the Daleks. I think I bought it in woolies over 20 years ago.

Anyone else think that Terrance Dicks was the best noveliser - I have all his Doctor Who books. They rock!
