Now that BTCellnet has become O2, shouldn't our phones display "O2","UK O2" or something similar? mine still shows "UK BTCellnet"

Nah, they don't often change these as many phones don't accept logos *Over the air* (via signals) and every phone display if different too. Though it wouldn't surprise me if they were offering them (Nokia phones most likely) through their website...?

it isn't really a logo is it? and when you take your phone abroad the phone displays the relevant service provider. so they can change it.

do you not think that they may have simply forgotten about this?

From what I understand the network name is stored in the SIM and is not 'read' off the air. Some phones can accept over the air updates and so some one2one phones have changed to T-Mobile UK but not all do. A bit confusing really.

I'm not sure if O2 have sent any updates but there is a link available to download a logo for Nokia/Siemens/Ericsson from their website.

I have never understood why the network names are not just part of the signal that the handset receives. When I was in Switzerland shortly after the launch of Orange CH over there my handset did not recognise the name as it wasn't stored in the SIM and displayed a series of numbers instead. Very confusing!

I don't know whether they're supposed to be updating that, i don't even know if your phone is supposed to do it automatically or if it's built into the sim (however i do acknowledge that they are dynamic when you are abroad and using a diff network)

If you go to http://www.ringtones.to/o2/freelogo/ (linked to the o2.co.uk website) you can get it to send you the official logo for free, but it'll only work with a nokia/siemens/ericcson handset..

funny thing is, I wanted to get rid of a really cheap logo on my nokia phone, so thought anything would be better than what I had, and got them to send me it - and then my original 'Orange' logo appeared. I'm mystified. Altho I did set that my network was Orange.. but i'm happy either way!

g'luck

It is stored on the phone, but also when you roam the name of the network you roam to displays so i'd have thought they could change it to UK 02 over the air waves.

The network name is stored either in the phone OR the SIM Card. If you switch to a newer SIM, the phone will show the name attached to the network code (XX-XXX) - only where there is no network name stored the network numeric code is revealed. Anyone who does not upgrade their phone or SIM card, will be stuck with the Cellnet (or BTCLNT) name or logo, as appropriate.

they could transmit it over the air and you would receive it in the same form as a text messege. But i highly doubt they will because some phones will be incompatible, it will cause confusion and also cause network traffic.

I'm not stuck with "UK BTCELLNET" when i go abroad, so what makes you so certain it can't be changed on the UK networks.

A phone holds a logo for every known network it can be used on

If you have a data cable this can be changed but you will only change the logo for the network you are on, there are two ways of demonstrating this.

1) Send yourself a new logo and then change sim cards to another provider, you will see your logo has dissapeared and the other providers logo appears e.g. you picture when you had a cellnet (o2) card in has dissapeared and it now displays UK Vodafone.
If you then put your cellnet card back in winnie the pooh will return, the logo was there all the time but the sim card tells the phone which it should use

2) Using a datacable and Logomanager with a nokia phone you can select your network and view the logo for each different provider.

As described before, it is possible for O2 to send everyone the new logo but the time spent and the cost to do this will be futile when a lot of the phones won't be able to accept the logo anyway, besides how long have you kept a mobile phone, most people replace it fo a newer model every year which from now will have the new logo as default

The network name displayed on the phone is stored in the phone's software. It can only be changed by changing the phone's software. Depending on the manufacturer of the phone this will be difficult or impossible.

The logo displayed on startup is a different matter and the operator may be able and choose to change this in some circumstances. This again depends on the model of the phone and the particular software load it contains.

When you are in the UK, O2 send out a numeric signal, consisting of the country code, and an operator identifier. Your phone knows that this code corresponds to "UK BTCELLNET" so it displays this. If you go abroad then the operator in that country will send you a code. Your phone looks this code up in a table, and displays the relevent operator name. If there is no entry in the table it usually just displays the number. This usually means that the network was launched after your phone was made.

Incidentally, Both Virgin and T-Mobile use the same network, so therefore use he same network code. But a Virgin Mobile will interpret this code as Virgin, whilst a T-Mobile phone will interpret this as T-Mobile (or One2One)

yep, and if you put a virgin phone into a 'non network locked' phone ( i have a bt cellnet/genie/o2 contract phone ] then the network comes up as One2One....( found this out when my friends mobile went flat... )

It can be quite random.

I have a t68 and a 6310i - my sim is about 10 months old (the old one finally gave up the ghost after 5 years).

On the t68 (newish handset) it says BTCELLNET and on the 6310i it says O2 - UK.

The phone does do a numerical network code lookup check and displays the name accordingly.

The networks are able to 'force' your sim to display something else over the air (akin to getting a logo) but o2 haven't bothered.

Quite sensibly too I must add. I work at Carphone and the number of confused customers who came in a few weeks ago saying "What's this T-Mobile thing on my phone was huge!"

Most people don't care about the name or what their phone displays, as long as they can use the damn thing and their bills are distinguishable from their phone number.

I have a 6510.

I did a manual network selection thing the other day. it displayed O2-UK and One2One.

I've done this in the past, it has previously shown up as BT Cellnet

To expand on this, if you have a stupid logo on your phone that you want to get rid of then go to the above o2 website, select download logo and then select the wrong network for your phone. When downloaded select save and your original operator logo will appear. Cool.
