Doctor Who - filling the aching void

For all of us feeling totally bereft tonight, particularly as the clock draws towards 7pm - I posited this idea rather vaguely elsewhere, but how about a reappraisal of the series, as we all rewatch from episode 1, one episode per week?

Most of us have access, in some form, to most if not all of the episodes. How about... we all watch Rose again this weekend, and post our thoughts? Hindsight is a marvellous thing, and it would be very interesting to go back to the start, and see how the characters have changed and story arc developed over the series.

Just a thought, but the cold turkey's kicking in badly here, and I suspect I'm not alone.

I think that's a great idea ND, however I'm one of the people who didn't record Rose and I haven't bought any of the DVDs yet as I have decided to wait for the boxset.

Doesn't mean I can't join in mind you, but it will all be from memory

I too have an aching void to fill - which decorating can in no way make up for (no matter how much 'No More Big Gaps' I use.) Seems I logged in just in time!

Excellent idea - I'm off to dig out the DVD.

I know exactly how you feel. Yet ANOTHER "Only Fools And Horses" repeat is no replacement. Once again Saturday TV turns into a load of un-watchable rubbish.
Sadly, I don't own the DVD, as I'm wating for the box set. However, rewatched the old Daleks/Daleks Invasion of Earth films with Peter Cushing earlier, which helped somewhat

Me too - wasn't going to buy them twice - so I recorded them on DVD when broadcast, and then I'll get the lovely box-set in November.

I groaned when I saw what had replaced DW. Yet another repeat of Only Fools. Nothing against it at all, but it does get dragged out quite a lot.

Loblocks, I'm off out in a minute, will have to join in after midnight!

Will it be a new thread? Damn, everyone's watching 'Rose'!
See ya later!

I swore blind I wasn't going to buy the individual DVDs, just wait for the box set, and very, very stupidly hadn't managed to record all of the eps, due to - well, stupidity, basically, and lack of blanks due to temporarily non-functioning-properly-for-several-weeks foot.

(deep breath) However, early premonitions of devastation to be caused by withdrawal had me scurrying through supermarket buying vol 1 last Saturday, swiftly followed by vol 2 last Thursday. Expect sudden availability of lots of individual vols on Blockbuster's used shelves when box set arrives.

Apparently there's some tennis on so am unable to ceremoniously watch Rose during usual sacred timeslot, but I guess maybe a new thread could be a good idea for each episode as we watch it, if there are enough takers?

Well your void should ache less, even if it's not as full as you'd hoped!

I rewatched Rose last night(then got very drunk so decided to wait until this morning to post. Anyway, after seeing it again I am 99% sure that the Consciessness said Bad Wolf, and thinking of it that way, how could Rose have caused that?

My void was filled quite admirably thanks - but boy, does it now ache

Anyway... managed to rewatch surviving episodes from 'Wheel in Space' and 'Celestial Toymaker' last night, as well as the McCoy story 'Battlefield,' then rewatched Rose this morning.

(Yes, cold turkey well and truley set in last night and I just had. to. have. a. fix!)

I still can't get the Nestene saying Bad Wolf - I have tried many times and shall be seeing a priest later in the hope that he can redeem me. In the meantime, I look upon it as a 'magic eye' picture - either you get it or you don't.

In my own opinion, considering that right up until 'The Parting of the Ways' the Doctor didn't know who or what Bad Wolf was, and considering that we the viewers didn't actually hear what the Nestene Consciousness said, and also considering that after the Nestene 'allegedly mouthed Bad Wolf' the Doctor looked at the TARDIS and said something along the lines of 'No, that's not true, I should know, I was there, I tried to save them all', I really don't see how the Nestene COULD have been saying 'Bad Wolf'... the Doctor doesn't know its significance!!!

I think it was wishful thinking on the parts of those who went back to watch ALL the episodes after we came to realise the words Bad Wolf seemed to be appearing almost every week.

Is there anyone who still has 'Rose' on Sky+ who could turn on the subtitles and put us out of our misery

In the meantime, I tend to go along with Author69's reasoning, but there is another possibilty that occurs.

This is a long shot!

(1) The Doctor mis-heard the Nestene, easy to do as we've all been pondering it for months and some of us have had the opportunity to listen dozens of times. What he thinks the Nestene says I'll leave to others to speculate.

(2) So why does the Nestene say 'Bad Wolf'? I'm going to leave a lot of blanks for you to fill in here, but while Rose/Tardis was in all of space and time, she could have gone back to before the events of 'Rose', and given the Nestene some 'clue'. I don't know, maybe some grafitti on its bedroom wall, a picture of the Tardis and the words 'Bad Wolf woz ere'.

I don't subscribe to this theory but I submit it in the hope of comforting the confused and confusing the comfortable.

I watched it twice over the weekend, and the first time I thought I saw it mouth the words - the second I didn't. Have feeling RTD may be having great laugh at us, however, if it didn't. It would be nice if he could give it a wee mentionette in an interview somewhere, rather in the way he did with "Some of my friends think it's the Face of Boe. I must get better friends" or whatever. Although "Some people think the Nestene Consciousness said..." may have less of a snappy, post-Wildean ring to it. It would be nice if he put us out of our misery, though. Any trained lip-readers amongst us, who could clear this up? Although the Consciousness was presumably speaking Nestene for the rest of his conversation with the Doctor?

Kudos to RTD - he's certainly left his audience begging for more.
